February 11th – Sochi 2014 – Daily Preview

What’s on tap today? Nine disciplines and competition in 11 events with eight gold medals awarded. Figure skating returns for the individual events now that the team event is done.

All times below are ET.

Biathlon

Events: Tuesday is the women’s 10 km pursuit event at 10 AM. The 60-woman field will chase the leader over the course with four rounds of shooting. Each missed shot is a 150 meter penalty loop. The field is staggered by the amount they finished behind the leader in the sprint event on Sunday. Three Americans will compete: Susan Dunklee, who might have medaled if she didn’t miss a target in the sprint event, starts in 14th starting 42 seconds after the leader, Sara Studebaker is 44th and starts 1:53 behind the leader, and finally Annelies Cook starts 2:17 behind the leader in 53rd.

The two pairs go one after the other, sixth and seventh in the event.

Freestyle Skiing

Events: After the US won both golds in snowboard slopestyle the question is can they continue that in ski slopestyle. We’ll find out on Tuesday during the women’s event. Things begin with a qualification round at 1 AM with 24 competitors including three Americans. The top 12 scores from the two runs move on to the final. There is no second chance semifinal.

For the US Keri Herman will be the fifth to go down the slope, Devin Logan will be the eighth to go, and Julia Krass is the 19th to go. The final will be held at 4 AM and there are two runs with the best score winning.

Luge

Events: The women’s singles event wraps up on Tuesday. After day one American Erin Hamlin is in third and has a great chance to become the first American woman to medal in luge. Hamlin will start things off for the US in the 9:30 AM third run. She is thus of course the third to go down the track. Kate Hansen is in tenth and will be the tenth down while Summer Britcher is in 15th… can you guess her start order ;)? Run four is at 11:20 AM with the order in the opposite order of the standings, so the US athletes will be near the end.

When:

  • Women’s Singles – Run 3 – 9:30 AM
  • Women’s Singles – Run 4 – 11:20 AM

Live Streaming: A live stream will be available on the NBC Olympics website or on the NBC Sports Live Extra app. You will probably have to authenticate a cable subscription to watch the live streams of the Olympics.

Ski Jumping

Events: The women get their turn in the ski jumping on Tuesday with their normal hill event. This is the only women’s event in ski jumping and the first time it has been held. There are two rounds (12:30 PM and 1:25 PM) with each of the 30 athletes jumping in each round and the combined score of the two jumps determining the final standings.

The first woman to ever compete in ski jumping at the Olympics will be American Sarah Hendrickson who goes first. Lindsey Van will go sixth while Jessica Jerome will go 15th. The US has a real chance to medal in this event.

When:

  • Women’s Normal Hill Individual 1st Round – 12:30 PM

Snowboarding

Events: Despite concerns raised over the last couple days about the condition of the halfpipe, the event is scheduled to begin at 5 AM with the qualification rounds. The field is large, 40 deep, and only 18 survive the qualification round. In each heat the top three move into the finals at 12:30 PM while four through nine get to go into the semifinals at 10 AM. In the semifinals the 12 competitors will be competing for six spots in the final. In all of the rounds of halfpipe everyone gets two rounds and their best score is all that counts.

In heat one Gregory Bretz will be the first American to go, 5th overall. Bretz is the only American in this heat. In heat two Taylor Gold will go fourth, Shaun White goes fifth, and Danny Davis goes 19th. The competition will be interesting to watch on Tuesday. No one knows exactly what will happen with the talented field and potential issues with the halfpipe.

When:

  • Men’s Halfpipe Qualification – 5 AM

Four of the 46 competitors are American. Sugar Todd goes first on the outside in pair four before quite a break before the next American. Lauren Cholewinski is on the inside in pair 12, Heather Richardson is on the outside in pair 15, while Brittany Bowe is on the inside in pair 18. The pairings for race two are based on the reverse order of the times from race one and will be set after the first race.
