February 12th – Sochi 2014 – Daily Preview

What’s on tap today? Things slow down a bit with just eight disciplines and competition in nine events with six gold medals up for grabs. In today: Alpine skiing, ice hockey, and nordic combined’s first event. Out today: Biathlon, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing, and ski jumping.

All times below are ET.

Alpine Skiing

Events: Alpine skiing returns with the women’s downhill competition on Wednesday at 2 AM. This is a single run event with the best time winning. There are four Americans in the 42-woman field. The first American down the mountain will be Jacqueline Wiles, second overall. Then we’ll see Laurenne Ross seventh, Stacey Cook goes 10th, and then Julia Mancuso 12th. Then there will be a lot waiting and hoping the times hold up!

When:

  • *Women’s Downhill – 2 AM

Live Streaming: A live stream will be available on the NBC Olympics website and on the NBC Sports Live Extra app. You will probably have to authenticate a cable subscription to watch the live streams of the Olympics.

TV Coverage: The alpine skiing will be included in NBC’s evening coverage from 8-11:30 PM ET.

Curling

Events: Things are quickly getting away from the US men in Sochi. Their 0-2 start has them eighth but there is still plenty of time to rally. They’ll try to do that starting with a match against 5th place Denmark (1-1) at 12 AM. The women are in a bigger hole at 0-3 with only six matches left. They desperately need a win against 4th place China (1-1) at 5 AM.

When:

  • Men’s Round Robin – USA vs. Denmark – 12 AM
  • Women’s Round Robin – USA vs. China – 5 AM
The USA women will play twice on Tuesday with the men playing once.
The US is a combined 0-5 in curling in Sochi. They’ll have two chances to get wins on Wednesday.

Ice Hockey

Events: There hasn’t been a lot of competition yet for the US in Sochi. They led most of the way against Finland in a 3-1 lead before routing Switzerland 9-0. Things will change on Wednesday at 7:30 AM when they take on Canada. The two teams are both 2-0 though the US has a better goal differential (+11 to +8). On the other hand Canada is yet to allow a goal in Sochi.

This matchup will be interesting to see who looks better but it really does’t mean too much in the race for the gold. Both teams have byes into the semifinal locked up already. It does seem that being the #1 seed and likely being on the Switzerland side of the bracket would make the semifinal easier, though it would be a miracle on ice situation if either country doesn’t make the gold medal match.

When:

  • Women’s Preliminary Round – Group A – USA vs. Canada – 7:30 AM

Live Streaming: A live stream will be available on the NBC Olympics website and on the NBC Sports Live Extra app. You will probably have to authenticate a cable subscription to watch the live streams of the Olympics.

TV Coverage: The ice hockey game will be shown LIVE on NBCSN from 7-10 AM ET

Luge

Events: The men are back in action on Wednesday as the doubles competition is held. The American duo of Christian Niccum and Jayson Terdiman will be the sixth to go in run one at 9:15 AM while Matthew Mortensen and Preston Griffall go 16th. The second run at 10:45 AM will be done in the reverse order of the times from run one.

When:

  • Men’s Doubles – Run 1 – 9:15 AM
  • *Men’s Doubles – Run 2 – 10:45 AM

Live Streaming: A live stream will be available on the NBC Olympics website or on the NBC Sports Live Extra app. You will probably have to authenticate a cable subscription to watch the live streams of the Olympics.

TV Coverage: The luge will be covered on NBCSN from 1:45-2:30 PM ET and as NBC’s late night coverage from 12-1 AM ET Thursday morning.

Nordic Combined

Events: Nordic combined finally gets underway in Sochi on Wednesday with the normal hill/10 km competition. The Americans have four in the 46-man field. Things begin with a ski jumping round at 4:30 AM. Todd Lodwick is the first to go for the US, 10th overall. Taylor Fletcher will go 23rd, Bill Demong 27th, and Bryan Fletcher goes 36th. The difference in scores from the ski jumping will be converted to times. The ski jumping winner starts the 7:30 AM cross-country portion first with the rest of the field delayed by the converted time they are behind. First man across the finish line wins.

When:

  • Individual Gundersen NH/10 km Competition Round – 4:30 AM
  • *Individual Gundersen NH/10 km Cross-Country – 7:30 AM

Live Streaming: A live stream will be available on the NBC Olympics website or on the NBC Sports Live Extra app. You will probably have to authenticate a cable subscription to watch the live streams of the Olympics.

TV Coverage: The nordic combined will be covered LIVE on NBCSN in their coverage from 3-7 AM ET, and included in coverage from 10 AM – 1:45 PM ET. It will also be covered on NBC’s daytime coverage from 3-5 PM ET.

Snowboarding

Events: After the US men failed to medal on Tuesday the women will give it a shot on Wednesday in the halfpipe. There are just 28 women in the field but four are Americans. Two runs per round, best score is all that counts. In the 5 AM qualification round the top three from each heat move on directly to the final while fourth through ninth move into the semifinals at 10 AM. In the semifinals the 12 in the field will be fighting for six spots into the final. The 12:30 PM final is straightforward with the best score winning. The run order for the second run is not the reverse order of scores from the first run.

In heat one of the qualification round Kelly Clark will be second to drop in. She is the only American in heat one. In heat two Arielle Gold is the first to go, Kaitlyn Farrington goes seventh, and Hannah Teter goes 13th.

When:

  • Women’s Halfpipe Qualification – 5 AM
  • Women’s Halfpipe Semifinals – 10 AM
  • *Women’s Halfpipe Finals – 12:30 PM

Live Streaming: A live stream will be available on the NBC Olympics website or on the NBC Sports Live Extra app. You will probably have to authenticate a cable subscription to watch the live streams of the Olympics.

TV Coverage: The snowboarding will be included in NBC’s evening coverage, 8-11:30 PM ET.

Speed Skating

Events: With the 500 m events over speed skating is back to races where the competitors will be swapping lanes and racing just once. The men’s 1000 m is on top for 9 AM on Wednesday and four Americans are in the 40-man field. Jonathan Garcia will be the first American to go, racing in pair seven. The next American isn’t until pair 15 when Joey Mantia goes. Shani Davis goes in pair 18 with Brian Hansen in pair 19.

When:

  • *Men’s 1000 m – 9 AM
