February 15th – Sochi 2014 – Daily Preview

What’s on tap today? Eight disciplines and competition in nine events with seven gold medals up for grabs. In today: Ice hockey, short track, and speed skating. Out today: Biathlon, figure skating, and freestyle skiing.

All times below are ET.

Alpine Skiing

Events: Four women in the 50-woman field for the Super-G are Americans. This single run event begins at 2 AM and it won’t take long before the first American is underway. Leanne Smith will be the second down the mountain. Laurenne Ross goes seventh, Julia Mancuso bids for a second medal in Sochi while starting 14th, and Stacey Cook goes 29th.

When:

  • *Women’s Super-G – 2 AM

Live Streaming: A live stream will be available on the NBC Olympics website and on the NBC Sports Live Extra app. You will probably have to authenticate a cable subscription to watch the live streams of the Olympics.

TV Coverage: The alpine skiing will be included in NBC’s evening coverage from 8-11:30 PM ET.

Cross-Country Skiing

Events: The women’s relay is a mass start event with 14 teams in the field. The US will leadoff with Kikkan Randall followed by Sadie Bjornsen. Liz Stephen will ski third while Jessica Diggins will bring it home. The first and second legs are skied classic style, the third and fourth legs are skied free style.

When:

  • *Women’s Relay 4x5km – 5 AM

Live Streaming: A live stream will be available on the NBC Olympics website and on the NBC Sports Live Extra app. You will probably have to authenticate a cable subscription to watch the live streams of the Olympics.

TV Coverage: The cross-country skiing will be shown LIVE as part of the coverage on NBCSN from 5:30-7 AM ET and included in NBC’s daytime coverage from 3-6 PM ET.

Curling

Events: The US women are now 1-5 and with fourth place at 3-2 they must win their last three and hope that Great Britain or China goes 1-3 down the stretch. Even then they could get pipped by the many teams in front of them… But at least entering Saturday there is a chance that the US can get to 4-5 and there is a tie for fourth at 4-5. We’ll see if that’s still true tomorrow night even if they do beat Sweden.

When:

  • Women’s Round Robin – USA vs. Sweden – 10 AM

Live Streaming: A live stream will be available on the NBC Olympics website and on the NBC Sports Live Extra app. You will probably have to authenticate a cable subscription to watch the live streams of the Olympics.

TV Coverage: The curling will be shown on CNBC from 5-8 PM ET.

Ice Hockey

Events: Jonathan Quick will remain in goal as the US takes on Russia in what could very well be the game that determines who wins Group A. There are four byes to the quarterfinals and only three groups so one second place team will get a bye. Baring an overtime game in the Finland-Canada game or the USA-Russia game the team that comes out of second place will have six points. It would be determined by goal differential with the three teams being A.) The USA-Russia loser if they win their final group game, B.) The Canada-Finland loser, and C.) The Switzerland-Czech Republic winner (as long as it was in regulation), so while this win would give the US a much easier path to the quarterfinals the bye is not out of reach even with a loss.

When:

  • Men’s Preliminary Round – Group A – USA vs. Russia – 7:30 AM

Live Streaming: A live stream will be available on the NBC Olympics website and on the NBC Sports Live Extra app. You will probably have to authenticate a cable subscription to watch the live streams of the Olympics.

Short Track Speed Skating

In the semifinals only the top two in each of the three heats move into the final at 7:09 AM. Alyson Dudek skates in the third heat, Jessica Smith in the fifth heat, and Emily Scott will be in the sixth heat.

The men’s 1000 m began on Thursday and we are now at the quarterfinal stage with four scheduled beginning at 5:45 AM. In each heat only the top two advance. Chris Creveling will be in the first heat. The third heat includes Eddy Alvarez and the fourth heat is where J.R. Celski will skate. The semifinals will be at 6:46 AM with the top two in each heat advancing to the 7:23 AM final.

Skeleton

Events: The men’s wraps up on Saturday with the third heat at 9:45 AM. This heat is run in the order of the total times so far so John Daly is third and Matthew Antoine will be fourth. The final American will be Kyle Tress going 21st. All of the men will be in heat four at 11:15 AM where the medals will be awarded and the top sleds will start in reverse order.

Ski Jumping

Events: Three Americans qualified for the first round of the large hill and will be back in action at 12:30 PM. 50 men are vying for 30 spots in the final round at 1:30 PM. Nick Alexander is the first competitor to jump while Anders Johnson will be 8th to go. The final American, Nicholas Fairall, will go 11th. They get only one jump with the top thirty scores moving on to the final round where they jump once more and the combined score of the two jumps gives the total scores.

Live Streaming: A live stream will be available on the NBC Olympics website or on the NBC Sports Live Extra app. You will probably have to authenticate a cable subscription to watch the live streams of the Olympics.

TV Coverage: The ski jumping will be included in NBC’s primetime coverage from 8-11:30 PM ET.

Speed Skating

Events: The news has come out that the US will be shedding their new suits that seem to have given them problems in Sochi and are headed back to their old suits for the rest of the Olympics. We’ll see if that makes a difference in the 1500 m on Saturday at 8:30 AM.

Four Americans are in the 40-man field with Jonathan Kuck going in pair nine. Brian Hansen goes in pair 16, Shani Davis in pair 17, and Joey Mantia in pair 20.

When:

  • *Men’s 1500m – 8:30 AM

Live Streaming: A live stream should be available on the NBC Olympics website or on the NBC Sports Live Extra app. You will probably have to authenticate a cable subscription to watch the live streams of the Olympics. I do not see one last right now but surely that is an oversight.

TV Coverage: The speed skating will be included in NBC’s primetime coverage from 8-11:30 PM ET.
