Time Trials Suit Chad Haga Well, Finishes 18th in Stage Nine of Giro d’Italia

Chad Haga hadn’t placed higher than 76th since his 12th place finish in the day one time trial so it should come as no surprise that he had his best finish since then on Sunday when the second time trial of the event was held. This time Haga was 18th, 2:12 back, and the only American to place in the top 100. Nathan Brown continues to be the top American overall, 27:19 back in 61st, with Joe Dombrowski 64th and Ian Boswell 77th.

After Monday’s off day the competition resumes with an 136-mile medium-mountain stage on Tuesday.

The US won two golds in Medellin this week and they both came on the men’s side. After the compound men’s team won gold on Saturday it was Brady Ellison‘s turn to do so in the recurve individual final on Sunday. Ellison smoked #9 Miguel Alvarino Garcia of Spain 7-1 to grab his first individual medal of the year. Ellison also made it two medals in two events for the US after Zach Garrett‘s silver in Shanghai. The women’s recurve team of Erin MickelberryLauren Clamon, and Anna Miscione didn’t do as well in the bronze medal final where they were shutout by Mexico.

Serena Williams and Bryan Brothers Win Italian Open Finals

Madison Keys had defeated two of the top five players in the Italian Open as she took out Petra Kvitova and Garbine Muguruza to reach the final of the Italian Open. Williams hadn’t won yet this year and this will be a nice boost for her headed into the French Open at the end of the month.

In men’s doubles the title went to#5 Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan who dropped the opening set but battled back to defeat #8 Jack Sock and Vasek Pospisil of Canada 2-6, 6-3, 10-7. Like Serena this is the first top level win for the Bryan brothers this year.

Colton Brown Only American to Reach Quarterfinals in Almaty

The best grand prix finish by an American since the first event of the year came this weekend and it wasn’t by whom you might expect. Making his first grand prix appearance since the 2016 opener in Havana Colton Brown won his opening two matches to become the first American to reach the quarterfinals since Havana. US Swept by Korea to Open 2016 Uber Cup

The US women’s badminton team opened up the Uber Cup with a sweep at the hands of Korea on Sunday. This was no surprise with Korea one of the best countries in the world and the US a big underdog. The US did not win a set and got no closer than 21-14 in any set. That was the first set Iris Wang played as she lost 21-14, 21-11. Crystal Pan also got a set to 21-11 after losing the first 21-9 and Annie Xu and Kerry Xu got one of their doubles sets to 21-11 as well before losing 21-7. Jennie Gai and Pan had the toughest lost of the day in doubles play 21-6, 21-4.

Tomorrow the US takes on Chinese Taipei. Chinese Taipei also went 5-0 on Sunday in a win over Mauritius but did drop a single set. The US surely needs a win to keep any hopes of advancing alive.
