Corey Cogdell Pulling Away in Trap at Shotgun Olympic Trials

2012 Olympian Corey Cogdell seized firm control of the women’s trap competition scoring a 72 while her competitors faltered to take an eight point lead over Ashley Carroll going into the final day of competition. Carroll shot a 67 which was not good but actually two points better than Janessa Beaman who had been within two points of Cogdell. Even with the final being a variable if Cogdell has a solid day she will be going back to the Olympics.

In the non-Olympic qualifying men’s trap competition Dustin McGowen shot a 66 fell off the pace set by Christopher Haire, who shot a 70. McGowen is now four points back of Haire. Haire didn’t end up with the solo lead though as Ryne Barfield scored a 73 and is now tied with Haire. Casey Wallace scored a 72 and only trails Haire and Barfield by a point. Myles Walker shot a 70 and remains five points back in fifth.

Virginia Thrasher Finishes Fourth in Women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions at ISSF World Cup in Munich

In the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions 2016 Olympian Virginia Thrasher nearly grabbed the second American medal of Munich but just missed out on it finishing fourth. Thrasher was into the final narrowly, qualifying in the final of the eight spots with a 583. She won a center 10 tiebreaker with 22 compared to 18 for Eva Roesken of Germany in ninth place. In the final Thrasher wasn’t the greatest in her kneeling and prone shots and was in sixth heading to the elimination standing shots. She was already 4.4 points behind third place so the pressure was on to try and make up ground quickly. She did move up into fourth at the cut to sixth but was still 2.6 points behind third. Needing some major help to finish any higher she got some, but still would have needed some nearly perfect shots and ended up in fourth. It was the second fourth place finish by an American this year and the young Thrasher is definitely a contender in Rio. Rachel Garner had a better qualifying round shoot than her elimination round as she scored a 578 and finished 34th. Hanna Carr on the other hand went backwards and shot a 570 and finished 64th.

In the men’s 10m air pistol competition Will Brown and Jay Shi both were not as close to the top eight finalists as they had hoped to be. Brown was the closer of the two with a 580 but finished four points behind the finalists in 20th. Shi finished in 35th and scored a 577. Nickolaus Mowrer had a shot at being the top American but after being in the 96-98 range in the first five series he shot a 91 to wrap things up with a 576, 41st best.

In the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions 2016 Olympian Matthew Emmons was one of the best of the day scoring an 1183, second best in his relay and overall. Jacob Buchanan also advanced after shooting a 1155 and finishing 31st in his relay. William Shaner was eliminated after finishing 42nd with an 1143 in his relay. Wednesday will be the qualifying round and final for the top eight.

The final event to begin in Munich will be the women’s 10m air pistol.

Justin Torrellas and Sam Ruddock Finish 16th at UIPM World Championship

Justin Torrellas and Sam Ruddock got off to a strong start in fencing at the men’s relay in the UIPM World Championship but couldn’t sustain their momentum as they finished in 16th of the 17 countries competing. Torrellas and Ruddock finished 4th in the fencing competition but a 16th in swimming put them far behind. After being one of four countries to fail to score points in the riding competition they didn’t have a chance at finishing highly and were 14th in the combined event to finish the day at 16th.

Tomorrow will be the women’s qualification event with Margaux IsaksenSamantha AchterbergIsabella Isaksen, and Jessica Davis competing for the US.

The UIPM World Championships continue through Sunday.

Matthew Emmons Wins Bronze in 50m Rifle Prone at ISSF World Cup in Munich

The US won their first medal of Munich on Monday and it wasn’t even from an Olympian in the event. The medal cam in the men’s 50m rifle prone thanks to the non-Olympian (at least in this event) Matthew Emmons. In the qualification round Emmons scored a 631.8, second best of the day, to qualify for the final. 2016 Olympian Michael McPhail nearly made it two in the final eight from the US with a 626.7, but that left him 13th and 0.7 behind the eighth place finisher. Emmons was fourth in the first stage of the final but moved into third after the fourth round of the second stage. Emmons had a lot of work to do to move into the top two and was eventually eliminated in third place, grabbing the bronze. The medal was the first by the US in the event in 2016 though Emmons made it fourth finalists and five top ten finishers.

In the 25m rapid fire pistol event 2016 Olympian Emil Milev improved on his 288 from the first day but only by a single point and moved up from 22nd to 20th, still finishing five points behind the top six final qualifiers with a 577. Alexander Chichkov also improved his score by a single point but jumped to 31st with a 571 total.

In the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions 2016 Olympian Virginia Thrasher was the best of the three Americans as all three qualified for the qualifying round. Thrasher shot a 577 to finish 12th in her relay. Not far behind her was fellow American Hanna Carr who shot a 574 and was 26th. Cutting it closest on qualification was Rachel Garner who scored a 571 and was second in the other elimination relay. Both Carr and Garner are participating in their first World Cup event of the year. On Tuesday the three Americans will compete in qualifying and attempt to reach the final which will be held later in the day.

Starting Tuesday, and wrapping up later in the day, will be the men’s 10m air pistol competition. Will Brown headlines the US athletes in the field. Brown has been fantastic at the world level so far in 2016 with a silver in Bangkok and a fifth place finish in Rio.

Also beginning will be the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions. 2016 Olympian Emmons, already with the bronze here in 50m prone, is a favorite to medal after a gold in Bangkok and a silver in Rio. There will only be a elimination relay on Tuesday.

Corey Cogdell Takes Trap Lead at Shotgun Olympic Trials

Reaching the halfway point of the second trap Shotgun Olympic Trials 2012 Olympian Corey Cogdell took the lead from Janessa Beaman. Cogdell shot a 45 to Beaman’s 44 to pull within a point going into Monday’s final. The final went poorly for Beaman as she got only one point to Cogdell’s four as Cogdell took a two point lead. Ashley Carroll shot a 46 and then won the final and pulled within three points of Cogdell. While Cogdell may have the edge for the Olympic spot there’s no doubt Beaman and Carroll both have a shot at this.

In the non-Olympic qualifying men’s trap competition Dustin McGowen shot a 47 and Christopher Haire shot a 46. Both struggled in the final with McGowen grabbing just one point and Haire two. They finish day two with 350 points and a three point lead over two people who made a move on Monday. Casey Wallace was five points back and Ryne Barfield was six points back but Wallace scored a 49 and Barfield came in second in the final to move to 347.

Two More US Women Reach Quarterfinals at AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships

Six of the US boxers who headed to Astana will be competing in the quarterfinals of the 2016 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships on Tuesday after two more advanced in the final day of preliminaries on Monday. Marlen Esparza in the 45-48kg division and Shadasia Green in the +81kg division had yet to compete until Monday and needed only one win to reach the quarterfinals. Both did so easily with 3-0 sweeps, Esparza over Korea’s Chorong Bak and Green over Romania’s Elena Turcin. Things didn’t go as well for 19-year-old Jajaira Gonzalez in the 64kg division as she lost 3-0 to China’s Wenlu Yang with each judge scoring it 39-37 to the Chinese boxer. Finally the Olympic hopes came to an end for Virginia Fuchs as Canada’s Mandy Bujold was eliminated and will use her Olympic qualifying spot from the Americas qualifier.

Joining Green and Esparza in the quarterfinals are 2012 gold medalist Claressa Shields in the 75kg division, 2015 Golden Gloves champion Christina Cruz in the 54kg division, Naomi Graham in the 69k division, and Franchon Crews in the 81kg division.

For reference the US won three medals, two gold and a bronze, at the last world championships in 2014. All of the weight classes will have quarterfinals on Tuesday with a day off Wednesday before Thursday’s semifinals.

LaShawn Merritt and David Oliver Win Events and Set Records at Diamond League in Rabat

With only nine Americans competing in Rabat, Morocco on Sunday we knew there wouldn’t be too many opportunities for the US to win events. The top contenders showed up strong though and managed to win two events. LaShawn Merritt made it two for two in the 400m defending his win earlier in the year from Doha and setting a new meet record in the process at 44.66. David Oliver stepped up in the 110m hurdles and won the event after finishing fourth in Doha. The margin was just 0.01 seconds and Oliver also set a meet record. Jason Richardson joined Oliver with a sixth place finish in the event giving the US two in the top six in both of the runnings so far this year.

Erik Kynard was unable to win the high jump for the second time this year but did manage to take second place. That was the same spot where Cassandra Tate found herself in the 400m hurdles after a season best performance. Also finishing top three with third place finishes were Buffalo Bills’ WR Marquise Goodwin in the long jump and Brittany Smith in the shot put.

It was a nice improvement after a fifth in Doha. The US had two in the top six in the 100m after Carmelita Jeter and Alexandria Anderson went back-to-back in fifth and sixth with Jeter notching a season best time.

The next Diamond League event is in the US as the world descends on the track and field hotbed of Eugene, Oregon on Saturday.
