Nathan Brown Finishes in Top 100 for Sixth Straight Stage at Giro d’Italia

Yesterday Nathan Brown moved into the top 50 overall for the Giro d’Italia and today he was the top American, 68th overall, to make it six straight stages where he has finished in the top 100. The surge over the final half of the race has made him the only American to finish in the top 100 in six straight stages so far. Joey Rosskopf finished 87th and has been in the top 100 for five straight stages now. Brown finished 21:37 back in this medium-mountain stage while Rosskopf was around a couple minutes behind him.

Overall Joe Dombrowski continues to be the top American though he fell four spots to 39th and is 1:21:52 back. Brown slipped to 52nd overall, Chad Haga fell to 89th and Ian Boswell is now 100th.

The final weekend begins Friday with the first of two mountain stages, a 101 mile stage that will lead the rider into France.

USA Cycling to Host Pro Time Trial and Road Race National Championships This Weekend in Winston-Salem

USA Cycling will be hosting the professional time trial and road race national championships this weekend in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The field includes several of the participants on the men’s and women’s world tours. On the men’s side some of the top contenders are Brent Bookwalter, 35th in the Tour de Romandie, Taylor Phiney, 33rd in the Gent-Wevelgem race earlier this year, and Alexey Vermeulen, 65th in the Tour de Romandie.

The women’s side features most of the top riders from the recently completed Amgen Tour of California. Kristin Armstrong Savola was second, Evelyn Stevens was third, Leah Thomas was fifth, Chloe Dygert was sixth, and Lauren Stephens was tenth. Also competing is Carmen Small who was fifth in the Gent-Wevelgem race.

Friday will be the men’s and women’s time trials while the road races will be on Saturday.

Joey Rosskopf and Nathan Brown Finish Among Peloton in Stage 17 at Giro d’Italia

With the second-to-last flat stage of the Giro d’Italia happening on Wednesday it was no surprise that a large peloton finished the race together. Two Americans, Joey Rosskopf in 69th and Nathan Brown in 76th, finished among the group. Ian Boswell was slightly behind and finished 86th, 35 seconds back.

Joe Dombrowski maintained his 35th overall position despite finishing outside of the top 150, He is now 1:11:54. Brown moved up to 50th overall, Chad Haga in 85th and Boswell in 97th make it four Americans in the top 100.

Thursday is a 152-mile medium-mountain stage, the longest stage of the event.

Joe Dombrowski Finishes in Top 40 for Fourth Straight Stage at Giro d’Italia

Joe Dombrowski was in the top 40 for the fourth straight stage at the Giro d’Italia as he finished 39th on Tuesday, 14:18 back. Nathan Brown finished in the same time but was actually the top American in 37th place. Dombrowski fell one spot to 35th but is now 1:09:09 back while Brown is up to 51st. Joey Rosskopf was the third American in the top 100 finishing in 71st. Overall Chad Haga remained 83rd and Ian Boswell moved up a spot to 99th.

Wednesday will be a 122 mile flat stage as the field gears up for the final three mountain stages.

Stage 15 of Giro d’Italia a Great Time Trial for Americans, Joe Dombrowski Eighth and Ian Boswell in 15th

Joe Dombrowski continues to push up the standings of the Giro d’Italia after finishing eighth in the mountain time trial 15th stage. Dombrowski was 52 seconds back of the winner and 33 seconds ahead of fellow American Ian Boswell who finished 15th. Nathan Brown made it three Americans in the top 60 with a 59th place finish and Joey Rosskopf in 68th gave the US four finishers in the top 70 for the first time in the competition.

Dombrowski moved up one spot overall to 34th, now 54:45 back. Brown moved up a spot as well to 53rd and Chad Haga remained 83rd. Boswell moved into the top 100 at 100th.

After Monday’s rest day the competition resumes with a 82 mile medium-mountain stage on Tuesday.

Lea Davison Finishes Eighth at World Cup Cross-Country Event

While the US still doesn’t have a medalist in the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup cross-country events this year Lea Davison was able to post the best American finish of the year. Davison was 16th after the first lap but steadily improved on that position throughout the race eventually reaching eighth and finishing 3:15 behind the winner. Davison was the only top 20 finisher from the US. Chloe Woodruff wasn’t higher than 20 after any laps and finished 22nd while Erin Huck finished 24th. On the men’s side Howard Grotts was the top finisher in 31st, 5:55 behind the winner, which was actually pretty impressive after he found himself 64th after the second lap. He posted top 12 times in each of the final three laps.

The next chance for the US to go after a medal in the cross-country event is in La Bresse, France on May 28th and 29th.

Megan Guarnier Wins Amgen Tour of California

Megan Guarnier finished with most of the Americans in the field as part of an 83-woman peloton and won the Amgen Tour of California on Sunday. It was the first win on the Women’s WorldTour for Guarnier who had finished in the top six four times previously. She won by 17 seconds over Kristin Armstrong and Evelyn Stevens who made it three Americans in the top three finishing 28 seconds back. After skipping fourth place the US also had finishers in fifth, sixth, and seventh (Leah Thomas 56 seconds back, Chloe Dygert 59 seconds back, Katie Hall 1:01 back). Cory Rivera 1:07 back in ninth, Lauren Stephens 1:25 back in tenth, and Brianna Walle 1:38 back in 13th. Five other Americans finished in the top 25, Mara Abbott in 17th, Tayler Wiles in 20th, Kathryn Donovan in 22nd, Amber Neben in 24th, and Ruth Winder in 25th.

The next UCI Women’s WorldTour event is the single day Philadelphia International Cycling Classic on June 5th.

31-Woman Peloton in Stage Three as Megan Guarnier Continues to Lead Amgen Tour of California

Megan Guarnier may have an insurmountable lead as the Amgen Tour of California heads to the final stage after finishing fourth in the peloton and growing her lead over Kristin Armstrong to 15 seconds after she finished 20th. Also finishing in the peloton were Coryn Rivera (2nd), Brianna Walle (5th), Heather Fischer (7th), Chloe Dygert (8th), Lauren Stephens (9th), Emma White (12th), Tayler Wiles (14th), Nina Laughlin (15th), Scotti Lechuga (16th), Evelyn Stevens (17th), Leah Thomas (18th), Katie Hall (19th), Amber Neben (26th), Kathryn Donovan (28th), Mara Abbott (30th), and Ruth Winder (31st). Stevens in third, 25 seconds back, Rivera is fifth, 44 seconds back, Thomas is sixth, 47 seconds back, Hall is seventh, 52 seconds back, and Dygert is eighth, 56 seconds back. Two other Americans, Stephens in 11th, 1:22 back, and Walle in 14th, 1:35 back, round out the American contingent in the top 15. Abbott in 16th, Wiles in 21st, Lechuga in 22nd, Donovan in 23rd, and Neben in 25th make it 14 Americans in the top 25.

Things wrap up Sunday with a 41-mile flat stage in Sacramento.

In Difficult Mountain Stage Joe Dombrowski Finishes 25th in 14th Stage of Giro d’Italia

Joe Dombrowski’s good week continued with a 25th place finish at the Giro d’Italia making up some major time on competitors after finishing within 9:44 of the winner. The US had all four of their other competitors finish in the top 100 after they all passed as part of a group 31:20 back. Chad Haga was the highest American in that group in 74th with Joey Rosskopf right behind him in 75th. Nathan Brown was 90th with Ian Boswell 93rd near the back of that group. Dombrowski’s good finish pushed him into the top 40, now 53:53 back in 35th. Brown in 54th and Haga in 83rd continue to hang in the top 100.

Sunday will be an interesting seven mile mountain time trial before the final rest day on Monday.

13 Americans Will Compete in World Cup Cross-Country Event in Albstadt, Germany

The second UCI Mountain Bike World Cup cross-country event of the year will take place in Albstadt, Germany on Sunday. 13 Americans are in the field including three women who have top 20 finishes this year. Chloe Woodruff was 13th in the first event in Cairns, Australia with Georgia Gould 18th and Lea Davison in 19th. On the men’s side Stephen Ettinger was the only American to finish in the top 50 when he placed 20th.
