Only two golds on Wednesday in the Olympics as the US started the day with an early morning gold in the women’s road time trial thanks to 37-year-old Kristin Armstrong and won a gold to end the day in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay thanks to 19-year-old Katie Ledecky. While the US won two other medals in swimming they also added their second silvers in both diving and fencing.
The US nearly matched their five gold medals from the first three days of the Olympics on Tuesday as some of the biggest names on the team – Gabby Douglas, Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky, Michael Phelps, and Ryan Lochte all added a gold medal to their resumes. There was the first silver medalist in men’s just since 1992 and the oldest member of the US team won a bronze medal in equestrian at the young age of 52.
Sunday was another strong day for the US with US coming close to gold in both fencing and shotgun before picking up medals. Cycling teased the country with a US rider not even a quarter kilometer from gold, and then swimming brought the house down in the evening with four pairs of swimmers reaching tomorrow night’s finals and, two gold medals, and three other medal. A surprising turn of events on Sunday at the FINA Diving World Series saw the US go 4-5 in the men’s 10 platform but in the order you might have expected. Steele Johnson had not competed for the US in the event at the first two world series stops and when he did compete in Windsor last weekend he was tenth of 11. This week Johnson was not spectacular in qualifying, only one of his six dives was better than third in his heat, but each round he was consistently solid and avoided devastating mistakes. The same couldn’t be said for David Boudia who bested Johnson on five of the six dives but came up over 30 points behind him on the sixth. Johnson finished with a 507.75 while Boudia was right behind him at 497.20, both making the final.
In the final both fell off the pace by the middle of the competition with Johnson eventually holding off Boudia by 28.25 points. Johnson was still 54.25 points behind the bronze medal winner but for the 19-year-old this still a really big result.
The Diving World Series has finished for the year with the next big event the US Olympic Trials June 18th through the 26th in Indianapolis.

Amy Cozad competed for the US on Saturday in the women’s 10m platform. Competing in semifinal B Cozad was never in qualifying position starting off in fourth but eventually ending up in sixth of the six divers in her semifinal. Cozad would have actually been close to qualifying had she been in the other semifinal as her final score of 304.55 was only 11.55 behind the third place finisher in that group. This was the worst finish for Cozad in any of the four world series events this year.
David Boudia and Steele Johnson have the final chance to medal for the US in Kazan. Both will compete in the men’s 10m platform on Sunday and are in the same semifinal. Boudia has been in the final at the three previous series stops and will be expected to reach the final again here.

Day 1 Update
Friday as the final Diving World Series event kicked off the first medal hope for the US was David Boudia and Steele Johnson in the men’s 10m synchronized event. After two strong dives to start the competition they trailed the Chinese divers by 4.8 points. Unfortunately Boudia and Johnson struggled on the next dive and fell from second to sixth. They recovered on the final three dives to move back into fourth but missed out on the bronze by 4.26 points.
On Saturday Amy Cozad will be competing in the women’s 10m platform competition. She’ll have to advance from the morning semifinals to compete in the finals in the evening.

Friday is the first day of the fourth and final stop of the Diving World Series and the synchronized events will be held. Competing for the US will be David Boudia and Steele Johnson as they have at all three previous events. The duo has only been in the top three on one occasion, a third place finish in Dubai.
Later in the weekend Amy Cozad will be competing in the women’s 10m platform competition on Saturday while Boudia will take part in the men’s event on Sunday.

David Boudia was the last hope for the US to medal in the Diving World Series event in Windsor and he came pretty close to doing that. Boudia scored a 533.05 in the finals but just missed out on the bronze as Thomas Daley nipped him for third with a 536.50. Steele Johnson also competed for the US on Sunday and finished tenth of the 11 divers competing in the semifinals with a 420.10.

On the second day of the FINA Diving World Series event in Windsor, Canada. Amy Cozad had her best competition of the year. Having just missed out on the final in the first two events she advanced from the semifinals this time finishing third in her semifinal with a 333.10. She wasn’t quite as competitive in the final as a 307.10 left her sixth but it was still an improvement on the last two events.
Sunday the event will wrap up with David Boudia competing in the men’s 10m platform competition. Boudia made the final in both of the previous events with a high finish of fourth in Dubai. Semifinals will be in the morning with the finals in the evening.
