Men’s Dual Moguls

Inawashiro - Mens Dual Moguls - Qualification

The US had a much strong qualification round for this event as six of the seven US men advanced from the qualification round by placing in the top 16. Patrick Deneen was the top American in fourth with Bradley Wilson and Joseph Discoe also placing in the top eight. Deneen advanced very tightly by a single point in the round of 16 while Bradley Wilson was beaten by his brother Bryon.

The quarterfinals were the end of the road for the Americans as both were knocked out in this round. Deneen came closest to advancing but lost 20-15.

Women’s Dual Moguls

Inawashiro - Womens Dual Moguls - Qualification

The US women were able to place five of their six competitors into the top 16 and Hannah Kearney rebounded from a DNF on Saturday to go top in qualifying. Heather McPhie followed with a second place seed. Kearney advanced easily in the round of 16 while Mcphie eked out a narrow 20-15 win while Sophia Schwartz moved into the quarterfinals as well with a 26-9 win.

Inawashiro - Womens Dual Moguls - Round of 16

Inawashiro - Womens Dual Moguls - QuarterfinalsIn a quarterfinal battle of Americans McPhie beat Schwartz 35-0 to move into the semifinals while Kearney had her closest matchup of the day getting the tight 19-16 win. The semifinals went much smoother for Kearney who had a big 28-7 win while McPhie kept it close but couldn’t knockoff Elena Muratova as she lost by the 19-16 score. That moved Kearney into the main final while McPhie would contest the small final.

Kearney took home the gold with an easy 34-1 win in the final while McPhie lost by the closest possible margin, 18-17, to end up 4th in the final standings.

Upcoming:

The next Freestyle Skiing World cup stop is in Arsoa, Switzerland on March 6th-7th but will only involve ski cross. Moguls will be back in Voss, Norway on March 15th-16th. WeSupportTheUS.com will have coverage of both upcoming World Cup events.

Bradley Wilson Wins Moguls Event at FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup Event in Inawashiro

Previous Inawashiro FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup Coverage

Men’s Moguls

Inawashiro - Mens Moguls - QualificationThree of the seven US men advanced from the qualification round to start things off on Saturday. Bradley Wilson was the top American in second with Dylan Walczyk and Joseph Discoe also placing in the top six. Wilson showed the best speed of the top skiers in the run, something that would continue all event.

Inawashiro - Mens Moguls - Final One

In round one of the final two of the three Americans were eliminated by failing to reach the top six. Discoe and Walczyk finished seventh and eighth so they didn’t miss out by much. Wilson finished third in this round but was again very quick.

Inawashiro - Mens Moguls - Final Two

In the last round of the final Bradley Wilson went fast again, the fastest of all his runs, and it paid off. If he’d been just a few hundredths of a second slower it would have cost him the title but instead he edged out Marc-Antoine Gagnon for the title despite a substantially lower jump score.

Women’s Moguls

Inawashiro - Womens Moguls - QualificationThe US women did a better job getting out of the qualification round with four of the six advancing (Ali Kariotis, Heather McPhie, Sophia Schwartz, and Eliza Outtrim), though they only placed one in the top six. Notably absent from that group was Hannah Kearney who took a DNF on her run.

Inawashiro - Womens Moguls - Final One

In the first round of the final the Eliza Outtrim made a big gain moving from 14th in the qualification round to fifth to advance to the final round along with Heather McPhie.

Inawashiro - Womens Moguls - Final Two

McPhie continued to improve her standings in each run in the final round when she finished second (after fourth and thirds in the previous two runs). Missing out on a medal in fourth was Outtrim.

Sunday Preview:

On Sunday both the men and women will hold dual moguls events. These events use a qualification round to set a bracket of the top 16 skiers. They will then battle head-to-head through four rounds of elimination with the top scorer advancing.

13 Americans, Including Sochi Bronze Medalist Hannah Kearney, Competing in Moguls in Inawashiro

The next step on the FIS Freestyle Skiing World Cup’s Moguls tour is in Inawashiro, Japan this weekend. Six women (Hannah Kearney, Ali Kariotis, Heather McPhie, Sophia Schwartz, Eliza Outtrim, and Keaton McCargo) are competing for the US. Kearney was the bronze medalist in Sochi while Outtrim finished sixth. McPhie also competed in Sochi but was bounced in the first round of the final, finishing 13th.

On the men’s side there are seven competing, Dylan Walczyk, Joseph Discoe, Troy Murphy, Bradley Wilson, Jeremy Cota, Bryon Wilson, and Patrick Deneen. Dennen was in the final round in Sochi, finishing sixth, while Bradley Wilson also made the team and finished 20th.

After a moguls event on Saturday (Japan time) there will be a dual moguls event on Sunday. In dual moguls events there is head-to-head competition in a number of rounds to reduce the field instead of cutting the lowest scores overall after rounds. The moguls event is well underway and I’ll have coverage of the results on Saturday.

Sochi 2014 – USA Gold Medal Winner #8 – Maddie Bowman

If it feels like most of the US medals are coming in the same event over and over again it’s because they kind of have. Four slopestyle events in Sochi: three gold medals. And now four halfpipe events in Sochi: three gold medals.

Maddie Bowman is the latest winner for the US as she took home the gold in the inaugural women’s ski halfpipe event in Sochi. Bowman is just 20-years old (turning 20 just a month ago) with a very bright future in front of her. She’s already the two-time defending champion in the SuperPipe in the X-Games and now she’ll be the defending champion in the Olympics at a young age. With a few days left to wrap things up she’s the youngest gold medalist in Sochi for the US.

Bowman hails from South Lake Tahoe, California. Despite the X-Games golds she’s been fairly unknown to most of the population. She’s even under 4,000 twitter followers still. That attention deficit will change a bit now that she’s an Olympic gold medalist and come four years from now there will be expectations. If we learned anything last night though it’s that Bowman doesn’t shy away from big moments at all.

February 20th – Sochi 2014 – Daily Review

The US women came oh so close to gold against Canada but it didn’t mean the US didn’t win gold on Thursday. They did win gold for the fourth straight day. The last time that happened? I’m not sure if it ever did but certainly not in 2006 or 2010!

Figure Skating

Events:

  • Ladies’ free program

All three US ladies had good short programs but the top skaters were all a significant amount better. That meant the US ladies needed strong routines but also some help from other skaters. Polina Edmunds, was first to go and put up a solid but not spectacular 122.21. She was ninth best in the free skate and finished ninth overall with a 183.25. Gracie Gold was next and skated fairly well. Still there were flaws and her 136.90 was only fifth best in the free skate. She finished fourth with a 205.53. Ashley Wagner was unable to capture the magic either. Her routine looked okay but had a lot of technical problems and she scored a 127.99, seventh best, and finished in seventh with a total of 193.20.

Third place came in at 216.73 so even with really really good programs that would have been a hard score for the US ladies to match. The US leaves Sochi with just two medals but a lot of young talents on the ladies’ side especially.

  • Polina Edmunds –  Finished 9th with a score of 183.25. In the free program scored a 122.21, 9th best.
  • Gracie Gold – Finished 4th with a score of 205.53. In the free program scored a 136.90, 5th best.
  • Ashley Wagner – Finished 7th with a score of 193.20. In the free program scored a 127.99, 7th best.

Sochi 2014 – USA Gold Medal Winner #6 – David Wise

This was the first time we’d ever seen the halfpipe competition in freestyle skiing as part of the Olympics and so no one has ever had a chance to ride the pipe on skis to such attention before. David Wise is the first ever gold medalist in the freestyle skiing halfpipe.

Wise is an interesting story. He’s just 23 years old but already married with a daughter, perhaps not what you think of when you see someone drop into a halfpipe. His gold medal in Sochi was no surprise at all. This is the defending world champion in the halfpipe and he’s won the X-Games superpipe golds in three straight years as well.

Still it’s unlikely the attention those accomplishments brought him, especially in the mainstream press, will be anything like what he’ll see after Sochi.

You can give Wise a follow on twitter @mrDavidWise and follow his career on his website, david-wise.com. From everything we’ve seen from him so far he’s a classic American success story. A family man who is on the top of his career at the moment as well.

February 18th – Sochi 2014 – Daily Review

Tuesday saw another gold medal for the US as the US had a number of really good performances. Disciplines are wrapping up as we head into the final few days of the Olympics and people make their final appearance in Sochi.

Alpine Skiing

Events:

  • Women’s Giant Slalom Run 1
  • *Women’s Giant Slalom Run 2

The first competitor up for the US was Mikaela Shiffrin and she put up a great run of 1:18.79 that was only fourth best at the time. It would have staying power though and ended up fifth best in run one. Julia Mancuso was next and after chasing the pace in the first half of the hill she got off course and missed a gate to take a DNF. Later on Megan McJames finished in 1:22.77, 32nd, and Resi Stiegler finished in 1:22.69, 31st.

The second run began with the first 30 in reverse order so Shiffrin was the first one to go for the US after 25 skiers. Shiffirn put up a good 1:18.58 run, sixth best of the second runs, and stayed in fifth with a 2:37.37, half a second off the lead. After the top 30 had gone McJames finished in 1:21.60, 30th best of the second heats, and her total time of 2:44.37 was 30th best. Stiegler went 29th best in run two with a 1:21.38 and she finished 29th overall with a 2:44.07.

Results Summarized:

  • Julia Mancuso – DNF on run one.
  • Megan McJames – Finished 30th with a time of 2:44.37. Was 32nd in run one with a 1:22.77 and 30th in run two with a 1:21.60.
  • Resi Stiegler – Finished 29th with a time of 2:44.07. Was 31st in run one with a 1:22.69 and 29th in run two with a 1:21.38.
  • Mikaela Shiffrin – Finished 5th with a time of 2:37.37. Was 5th in run one with a 1:18.79 and 6th in run two with a 1:18.58.

February 17th – Sochi 2014 – Daily Review

On Monday the US grabbed their first gold since Thursday and had a couple of historic firsts. Several events got canceled due to the weather and the US hockey team won a medal, we just won’t know which one until Thursday.

Biathlon

Events:

  • *Men’s mass start 15 km
  • *Women’s mass start 12.5 km

The men’s 15km mass-start was supposed to be Sunday. Then it got postponed until Monday. Then it was rescheduled, and now it’s been postponed again… to Tuesday. Fog in the area was just too dense to hold the event. Hopefully things will work better on Tuesday at 5:30 AM ET.

The women’s 12.5km mass start did happen with the only American in the field, Susan Dunklee. Dunklee had a great start and was in sixth heading into the second round of shooting but missed one target in each of the final three rounds of shooting. Despite a great effort in the skiing she couldn’t overcome the shooting woes and finished 12th in 36:57.9, 1:32.3 behind the winner.

Results Summarized:

  • Susan Dunklee – She finished in 12th with a time of 36:57.9, 1:32.3 behind the winner, after missing 3 targets.
