Christina McHale Comeback Puts US One Win Away From Spot in 2017 Fed Cup World Group

Christina McHale had the opportunity to seize control of the Fed Cup tie against Australia on Saturday when she took on Sam Stosur. An earlier fairly straightforward 6-4, 6-2 win by Madison Keys over Daria Gavrilova put the US in front. McHale was shaky from the start getting broken in her first two service games and trailing 4-1. She lost the first set 6-3 but rebounded quickly in set two taking the first five games and eventually the set 6-1. Holding serve was the story in the third and decisive set as the two traded serve until at a 3-3 tie McHale had numerous opportunities to break. Six break points can and went and eventually Stosur pulled out the game. The two continued to trade games all the way to 5-5 before McHale finally got another chance to break Stosur and took advantage. McHale lost two of the first three points in the final game but won the next three to close out the set and give the US a huge 2-0 lead.

Now on Sunday Keys has the opportunity to lock things up for the US against Stosur and even if she falters the US will have two other opportunities to close out the tie when McHale takes on Gavrilova and when Coco Vandeweghe and Bethanie Mattek-Sands take on the Australian doubles team of Casey Dellacqua and Arina Rodionova. As always with these Fed Cup matchups they are subject to change at coach Mary Jo Hernandez discretion.

US Set to Face Australia With A Spot in 2017 Fed Cup World Group at Stake

On Saturday down in Australia the US will take on the Aussies in an attempt to rejoin the Fed Cup World Group in 2017 for the first time since 2014. In this stage in 2014 the US lost to France and to Italy in 2015 knocking them into World Group II. The team tasked with getting the US back to the World Group is Madison KeysChristina McHaleCoco Vandeweghe, and Bethanie Mattek-Sands. The US is missing all three of their top players in the world rankings (Serena WilliamsVenus Williams, and Sloane Stephens) but this group certainly is strong enough to get the win.

Things get started on Saturday with two singles matches. Keys will be taking on Daria Gavrilova with the American slightly higher ranked. These two have never met and a lot of pressure will be on Keys to start things off well for the US. The second match features McHale taking on Sam Stosur. Stosur has a significant advantage in the rankings and experience and is 4-0 against McHale. That’s why Keys’ match is so important as you’d certainly give Stosur the edge in match two and the US going down 2-0 would put them in huge trouble.

Bryan Brothers Out in Second Round at Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters

The Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters doubles competition is devoid of Americans after fifth seed Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan dropped their second round match to Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah of Colombia 6-4, 6-3. The first set saw the Bryans get seven chances to break their opponents but they only succeeded once. They were broken twice in each set and lost four of the six break points they faced for the afternoon as the Colombians moved on to the quarterfinals.

The next ATP Masters 1000 level event is the Madrid Open in Spain starting on May 2nd.

Rajeev Ram Out, Bryan Brothers Up Next at Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters

The first American to compete at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Master this week was Rajeev Ram in the doubles competition with South African Raven Klaasen. Their tournament lasted less than an hour after a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Henri Kontinen of Finland and John Peers of Australia. Ram and Klaasen never broke their opponents and won just eight of 44 points when returning serve. On Thursday Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, seeded fifth, will open play in the second round against Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah of Colombia. This matchup is 3-2 lifetime to the Bryans but they have lost the last two meetings.

Three Americans to Compete In Doubles Competition at Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters

While there were no American entrants into the ATP tournament over in France this weekend there were a couple in the doubles field. The big one is of course the brothers-duo of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan. The brothers are seeded fifth and have a bye to the second round. Not seeded and playing in the first round on Wednesday will be Rajeev Ram who is teaming up with South African Raven Klaasen. They are taking on Henri Kontinen of Finland and John Peers of Australia. The winner will take on the #1 seed in the second round so it’s going to be a challenge to advance far in this one.

The American women are gearing up for a Fed Cup World Group Playoff match at Australia at the end of the week to try and get back into the top group for next year’s competition.

Seven Americans Including Madison Keys and Alison Riske In Sony Open First Round Today

The Sony Open kicks into high gear today as qualifying is over and the singles draws start in full force. Two Americans did play in the first round yesterday with Varvara Lepchenko getting a win 7-5, 6-1 over Yanina Wickmayer and Bethanie Mattek-Sands seeing her tournament end quickly after a 3-6, 6-3, 3-6 loss to Elina Svitoina, a tough opening round draw for Mattek-Sands.

Four of the seven Americans (Madison Keys, Alison Riske, Vania King, and Victoria Duval) are taking on qualifiers and are the higher ranked player in their matchup. Coco Vandeweghe, who emerged from qualifying for the US, takes on Marina Erakovic and is the underdog. That leaves two other matchups that are worth highlighting. Lauren Davis, who had such a great BNP Paribas Open before coming down with food poisoning in the round of 16, takes on Shuai Zhang. Zhang is one of the best unseeded players in the field so this is a tough first round matchup for Davis. Hopefully Davis can continue her strong form from Indian Wells and have another strong week. The other interesting matchup is Christina McHale and Jie Zheng. Both are ranked in the mid-50s so that has all the look of a really good battle.

Schedule:

  • March 19th – 11 AM-11 PM ET – Tennis Channel

#17 Sloane Stephens saw her time in Indian Wells come to and end against #20 Flavia Pennetta Thursday. Pennetta took sets one and three 6-4 while Stephens did mange to nip the second set 7-5. As usual Stephens was fairly inconsistent in the match and at times looked like she’d get routed and would also come back to win easily. Sloane will now look forward to the Sony Open starting next week and another chance at a big tournament, though at this point we are all waiting for her first tournament win more than a semifinal run.

#17 Sloane Stephens continued her strong play on Tuesday when she beat Alisa Kleybanova 6-3, 7-5 to move into the quarterfinals. Her quarterfinal opponent will be #20 Flavia Pennetta, so Stephens will be favored in Indian Wells to make the semifinals. There’s no doubt she’s showing again why she’s a potential future world #1, when she is on her game she is one of the best around already.

Unfortunately Lauren Davis wasn’t able to reach the quarterfinals and for very sad reasons. She was not able to take the court for her round of 16 match vs. Casey Dellacqua due to food poisoning. She had a great tournament and can hopefully use that to propel her to even bigger future success.

#12 John Isner has not and will not face any higher ranked players unless he reaches the men’s semifinals. After beating #30 Fernando Verdasco 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-3 on Wednesday in the round of 16 he’s set for a quarterfinal matchup with #20 Ernests Glubis on Friday. Isner has looked good this week and a semifinal appearance in Indian Wells would be a great way to kick start his season after a slow start dealing with injury.

We know that there will be an American doubles teams in the final as John Isner/Sam Querrey will take on #1 Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan in the semifinals on Thursday.  The Bryan brothers will obviously be favored but the way Isner/Querrey have played this week it’s certainly true that anything is possible.
