Nathan Brown With Huge Fourth Place Finish in Stage Ten of Giro d’Italia

Other than Chad Haga’s two top 20 finishes in the time trials no American had finished higher than 23rd in a stage of the Giro d’Italia so far. That changed in a big way on Tuesday as Nathan Brown posted a fourth place finish on the competitions first day back from a rest day. There was a lot of separation at the front as Brown was 1:53 back of the winner and over a half minute behind third place. Brown moved into the top 50, now sitting at 42nd and 26:56 back. For the first time in the Giro d’Italia there were two Americans in the top 50 of a stage as Joe Dombrowski was 40th, 4:29 back. Dombrowski is now in 50th place, 31:51 back. Haga made it three in the top 100 as he placed 75th and moved into the top 100 in 85th. Ian Boswell still sits in the top 100 overall in 90th.

Wednesday will be a 141-mile medium-mountain stage.

Frank Thompson Pulls Into Lead on First Day of Shotgun Olympic Trials

2012 Olympian Frank Thompson got off to a strong start on Tuesday at the Shotgun Olympic Trials posting a first day 74 in men’s skeet to pull ahead with a one point lead over Phillip Jungman, who shot a perfect 75 on the day. Hayden Stewart scored a 72 and now trails Thompson by two points. Thomas Bayer shot a 73 and is now five back but alone in fourth place. On the women’s side 2012 gold medalist Kimberly Rhode shot a 70 while Amber English shot a 71 as Rhode’s lead was trimmed from five points to four.

On the second day of the competition on Wednesday there will be two more rounds of 25 targets followed by a finals competition. With the scores so tight in both competitions the finals are a big opportunity to pick up a few extra points. There will also be the first 150 targets of the double trap competition and a final in that contest as well.

Time Trials Suit Chad Haga Well, Finishes 18th in Stage Nine of Giro d’Italia

Chad Haga hadn’t placed higher than 76th since his 12th place finish in the day one time trial so it should come as no surprise that he had his best finish since then on Sunday when the second time trial of the event was held. This time Haga was 18th, 2:12 back, and the only American to place in the top 100. Nathan Brown continues to be the top American overall, 27:19 back in 61st, with Joe Dombrowski 64th and Ian Boswell 77th.

After Monday’s off day the competition resumes with an 136-mile medium-mountain stage on Tuesday.

The US finished off the Arena Pro Swim Series event in Charlotte with several wins on Sunday. The US got off to a good start when Leah Smith won the 800m with Ashley Twichell finishing second and Lindsay Vrooman making it a clean sweep.

It was a 1-2 finish for Americans in the 200m individual medley as Caitlin Leverenz and Karlee Bispo finished atop the standings. The same was true on the men’s side where Ryan Lochte and Connor Dwyer took the top two spots. The first event not won by the US on Sunday was the 200m backstroke where Canada’s Dominique Bouchard took top honors but the US did grab the next two spots through Erin Voss and Clara Smiddy. On the men’s side it was the same story with Serbia’s Arkady Vyatchanin topping the Americans, Tyler Clary and Carter Griffin.

Lilly King won the women’s 50m breaststroke with Katie Meili following her to the line 0.07 seconds later. The US won again with Cody Miller 0.11 seconds ahead of Canadian Jason Block. Nic Eriksson finished third for the US but 0.32 seconds behind second. The US only grabbed one medal in the final women’s event but Dana Vollmer finished behind Canadians Penny Oleksiak and Chantal Van Landeghem so it was a bronze. Canada grabbed the top spot in the men’s event through Santo Condorelli with Jimmy Feigen finishing with a silver for the US. In the final event of the day Connor Jaeger won his second 1500m freestyle event of the year to go along with two silvers. Zane Grothe grabbed a silver medal to wrap up the event for the US.

Brady Ellison Wins Gold at Archery World Cup in Medellin

The US won two golds in Medellin this week and they both came on the men’s side. After the compound men’s team won gold on Saturday it was Brady Ellison‘s turn to do so in the recurve individual final on Sunday. Ellison smoked #9 Miguel Alvarino Garcia of Spain 7-1 to grab his first individual medal of the year. Ellison also made it two medals in two events for the US after Zach Garrett‘s silver in Shanghai. The women’s recurve team of Erin MickelberryLauren Clamon, and Anna Miscione didn’t do as well in the bronze medal final where they were shutout by Mexico.

Overall this was a strong weekend for the US though their 2-5 record in final matches was a bit disappointing. The next World Cup stop is in Antalya, Turkey starting June 12th.

Serena Williams and Bryan Brothers Win Italian Open Finals

Madison Keys had defeated two of the top five players in the Italian Open as she took out Petra Kvitova and Garbine Muguruza to reach the final of the Italian Open. There she ran into someone who was finally too much for her to handle. #1 Serena Williams held off Keys in a first set tiebreaker and then ended the match in the second set as she won the Italian Open title 7-6(5), 6-3. Williams hadn’t won yet this year and this will be a nice boost for her headed into the French Open at the end of the month.

In men’s doubles the title went to#5 Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan who dropped the opening set but battled back to defeat #8 Jack Sock and Vasek Pospisil of Canada 2-6, 6-3, 10-7. Like Serena this is the first top level win for the Bryan brothers this year.

The next major event on both the WTA and ATP tours is the French Open beginning May 23rd and running until June 5th.
