US Set to Face Australia With A Spot in 2017 Fed Cup World Group at Stake

On Saturday down in Australia the US will take on the Aussies in an attempt to rejoin the Fed Cup World Group in 2017 for the first time since 2014. In this stage in 2014 the US lost to France and to Italy in 2015 knocking them into World Group II. The team tasked with getting the US back to the World Group is Madison KeysChristina McHaleCoco Vandeweghe, and Bethanie Mattek-Sands. The US is missing all three of their top players in the world rankings (Serena WilliamsVenus Williams, and Sloane Stephens) but this group certainly is strong enough to get the win.

Things get started on Saturday with two singles matches. Keys will be taking on Daria Gavrilova with the American slightly higher ranked. These two have never met and a lot of pressure will be on Keys to start things off well for the US. The second match features McHale taking on Sam Stosur. Stosur has a significant advantage in the rankings and experience and is 4-0 against McHale. That’s why Keys’ match is so important as you’d certainly give Stosur the edge in match two and the US going down 2-0 would put them in huge trouble.

Beiwen Zhang Swept in Quarterfinals at OUE Singapore Open

Beinwen Zhang put up a strong fight at the OUE Singapore Open in the quarterfinals but was still swept by higher ranked, He Bingjiao of China. Zhang held an early 7-2 lead before He showed her class with an 8-0 run to take back control of the game. Zhang would briefly tie it again at 11 before He pulled away for the 21-16 win. Zhang held a 13-9 lead in game two before a closing 12-2 run from He ended the match with a 21-15 second game win.

The strong tournament should boost Zhang’s confidence and she has now advanced in two of the three Super Series events she has taken part in this year. The next Super Series event is the Indonesia Open Super Series Premier in Jakarta starting on May 30th.

Before that the US women will participate in the 2016 Uber Cup in Kunshan, China starting on May 15th. The US didn’t qualify for this team competition in 2014 and the men missed out on the corresponding Thomas Cup this year and in 2014. The US women were seeded 13th but have been placed into a group with #3 Korea, #7 Chinese Taipei and #16 Mauritius so advancing to the knockout round is not out of the question.

Canada, France, and New Zealand Await US in Quest for Tenth Straight Cup Quarterfinal

The US heads to Singapore looking for their tenth straight cup quarterfinal appearance and a change in fortune after an topsy-turvy weekend in Hong Kong. While the US swept pool play in Hong Kong they were shutout by both South Africa and England in the knockout round competition.

The squad is slightly changed as Pat Blair replaces Ben Pinkleman in the 12-man squad. Carlin Isles will once again not be participating and you have to imagine that this weekend Nate Ebner will see some time as playing with only 11 for the weekend is not something you want to do once, let alone twice in two weeks.

The US opens with their northern rivals Canada before taking on France and finally New Zealand. You would expect the France match to be for the second spot in the cup quarterfinals out of the pool while New Zealand will be favored to top the pool. The pool matched up for the next round is Scotland, Kenya, Russia, and South Africa. So finishing top of the pool likely will have a big benefit in who the matchup would be against in the quarterfinals.

The men’s four will be off until Sunday’s final while the lightweight men’s four team will compete in the semifinals on Saturday.

Katie Meili, Dana Vollmer, Katie Ledecky and Connor Dwyer Headline First Day Winners at Arena Pro Swim Series in Mesa, Arizona

The first day of the Arena Pro Swim Series in Mesa, Arizona saw Americans take first place in the majority of the contests.

In the women’s 200m freestyle Katie Ledecky continued her winning ways making it four out of four in the series so far. Allison Schmitt had her top finish of the year in second place as the top two were well out in front of the rest of the field. Over on the men’s side similar dominance was shown by Connor Dwyer who made it three for three and finished a second a half ahead of everyone else. Ryan Lochte finished third as Venezuelan Cristian Quintero slipped between the two Americans.

Over in the women’s 100m breaststroke Katie Meili won her second in two tries this year with Jamaican Alia Atkinson and Molly Hannis both within a half second of her. The men’s 100m breaststroke had one of the best finishes of the day as Andrew Wilson, Youssef El Kamash of Egypt, Miguel De Lara Ojeda of Mexico, and Azad Al-Barazi of Syria, all finished within 0.07 seconds. El Kamash got the win with De Lara Ojeda in second and Wilson the top American in third.

Dana Vollmer, having finished twice so far this year, finally won the women’s 100m butterfly while Kelsi Worrell was runner-up a third of a second back and Cassidy Bayer almost two seconds back in third. On the men’s side Seth Stubblefield, who had yet to register a top ten finish in two attempts this year, won the event with Jack Conger, ninth in his only appearance so far, in second. Giles Smith was third and now has finished at every top-five spot except for second in the first four races of the year.

Finally in the women’s 400m medley Katinka Hosszu of Hungary won for the second time this year while Cammile Adams added a second place finish to her two previous top-five finishes and Ella Eastin in her first appearance was third. On the men’s side Sean Grieshop, sixth in his only previous appearance, won by over three seconds with Tunisian Ous Mellouli in second and Gunnar Bentz with a third place finish in his first race.

Friday features races in the 200m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 200m breaststroke, and 400m freestyle. Preliminaries in the morning, finals in the evening.

Cammile Adams has won both of her attempts at the 200m butterfly and also in the field is Cassidy Bayer who was third in her only attempt so far and Maya DiRado who won the event in Orlando. On the men’s side Michael Phelps will race, second in his only entry so far this season, as will Andrew Seliskar, third in Austin, and Chase Kalisz who won in both Minneapolis and Orlando.

Top contenders in the women’s 50m freestyle include Madison Kennedy, first in Orlando and second in Austin, and Simone Manuel, who was second in both of her races so far this season. On the men’s side Nathan Adrian has won each of the first three events of the series and will look to make it four-for-four while Jimmy Feigen, third in his only appearance, is also in the field.

In the 100m backstroke Missy Franklin, who has won two of the three events so far, will go head-to-head against the only one to beat her so far this year, Katinka Hosszu of Hungary. On the men’s side David Plummer, who won in Minneapolis and came in third in Austin, is the only of the first three winners to compete this weekend perhaps making him a favorite.

Three Americans with good finishes so far this year will all compete in the 200m breaststroke Laura Sogar was the winner in Austin while Molly Hannis finished right behind her. Haley Spencer finished second in Minneapolis. This will be only the second competition for all three. On the men’s side Nic Fink has finished second in all three events so far but just might get his first win as the winners from the first the first three races are not competing.

Finally in the 400m freestyle there are a lot of good swimmers in the field but it’s clearly headlined by Katie Ledecky, who won the two events she raced in so far this year. Also competing is Lotte Friis who won the other and was fourth in her other attempt. Connor Dwyer is two-for-two winning the men’s 400m freestyle but Michael McBroom, who was second in his only competition so far, will provide competition.

Samantha Achterberg and Isabella Isaksen Reach Final in UIPM World Cup Event

Both American women competing at the UIPM World Cup in Kecskemet, Hungary scored high enough on Thursday to reach Saturday’s final. Samantha Achterberg used a strong 543 score in her combined competition, tied for tenth on the day, and decent scores in the swimming and fencing to post a 1019 that was six points clear of the first person to miss the final. Isabella Isaksen was even stronger in the combined with a 548, tied for seventh on the day, and won 15 of her fencing matches to finish with a 218 in that category and a total of 1042 that had her easily in the final. Jessica Davis failed to qualify for the final after finishing last in the swimming category in her group and struggling in the combined as well.

On Friday Brendan AndersonSam RuddockJoshua Spegman, and Justin Torrellas will try to qualify for the men’s final. Five Americans to Compete in FINA Diving World Series Event in Windsor

Starting on Friday the third 2016 FINA Diving World Series event will take place in Windsor, Canada. Five Americans will be competing with four in competition on Friday. Sam Dorman and Kristian Ipsen will be competing in the men’s synchronized 3m on Friday afternoon. They were third in Dubai after finishing fourth in Beijing.

Bryan Brothers Out in Second Round at Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters

The Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters doubles competition is devoid of Americans after fifth seed Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan dropped their second round match to Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah of Colombia 6-4, 6-3. The first set saw the Bryans get seven chances to break their opponents but they only succeeded once. They were broken twice in each set and lost four of the six break points they faced for the afternoon as the Colombians moved on to the quarterfinals.

The next ATP Masters 1000 level event is the Madrid Open in Spain starting on May 2nd.

Beiwen Zhang Into Quarterfinals at OUE Singapore Open

Beinwen Zhang was tested at the OUE Singapore Open on Thursday being forced to fight back after dropping an extended first game to Yip Pui Yin of Hong Kong 25-23. Zhang briefly led late in the game 23-22 before Yip won the final three points to take the game. Zhang never trailed in the second game winning 21-16 and used an 8-0 run after things were tied at nine in the third game as she went on to win the decisive game 21-14. The win moves her into the quarterfinals of a Super Series event for the first time since reaching back-to-back quarterfinals in October 2014.

Her opponent is surprisingly another unseeded player, He Bingjiao of China. He is a higher ranked player than Zhang so she will face an uphill challenge to make a semifinal run. Still regardless of what happens on Friday for her to be playing in one of the 20 matches on Friday is a big success.
