The Daily Report – USA Sevens Starts 1-2 in Brazil, Abierto Mexicano Telcel Qualifying to Begin With 5 US Men

Abierto Mexicano Telcel (ATP) Qualfiying

The US has five men who will start qualifying on Saturday in Acapulco vying for spots in the main draw starting on Monday. #1 Donald Young takes on Guatemalan Christopher Diaz-Figueroa in the first round, the two have never met. The next highest seeded American, #5 Tim Smyczek, is in Young’s quarter of the draw and so they are playing for the same qualifying spot. Smyczek will be taken on Mexican Cesar Ramirez for the first time.

The final seeded American is #7 Wayne Odesnik. Odesnik is facing fellow American Daniel Kosakowski for the first time. The final American in the field, Nicholas Meister, is facing German #8 Mischa Zverev, they have never met.

If Young and Smyczek do meet for a spot in the main draw it will be the second year in a row that has happened. They met in the qualifying draw in Atlanta last year with Smyczek winning 7-5, 7-6 (3).

Brazil Seven’s (Women’s Sevens Rugby)

On Friday the US started off by taking on an England squad whom they had gone 1-1 against in the first two tournaments of the year including a win last weekend in Atlanta. Things didn’t go so well on Friday with England winning 19-5 and the only score for the US a Jessica Javelet try. Next up the Americans took on New Zealand and while they didn’t win they put up a much stronger showing than the last time with this game just 5-0 at the half before New Zealand extended away. To end the day the US got a chance to beat up on the weakest team in the group, Ireland. The US won 22-0 behind tries from Megan Lee Bonny and Javelet (three) while Christy Ringgenberg added a conversion.

The 1-2 record left the US in third place in the group and they ended up the third best of the third place teams due to point differential. That means the US won’t be in the cup quarterfinal (top eight teams) and can’t win the plate (fifth place) for the second weekend in a row.

Brazil Bowl Schedule

Instead the US is in the bowl (9th place) semifinals against Argentina. If the US wins that one they will face the Brazil-Ireland winner for the bowl. If they lose they will face the Brazil-Ireland loser for 11th place. It will be the first time in the three tournaments this year that the US will only place twice on the second day.

Schedule

  • 1:58 PM – Bowl SF – USA vs. Argentina
  • 5:04 PM – 11/12th – USA vs. Ireland/Brazil loser – If USA loses to Argentina they’ll play this game
  • 5:26 PM – Bowl Final – USA vs. Ireland/Brazil winner – If USA beats Argentina they’ll play this game

Venus Williams Into Dubai Final but Serena Upset in Semifinal

Everyone thought that if only American would make the final in Dubai it would be #1 Serena Williams. Everyone was wrong. Venus Williams routed #8 Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 6-2 in 1:21. Williams was strong on her first serve and won over half the points on both the first and second serve of Wozniacki as she broke her six times in nine service games.

In the other semifinal Serena took on Alize Cornet, the lowest ranked opponent of the tournament thus far for her and someone she was 3-0 against. She never found a way to break the Cornet serve though and only saw one break point in 10 service games. Williams struggled on her second serve winning just nine of 24 points. The upset loss meant we wouldn’t see a VenusSerena final, something we haven’t seen in over four years.

Reaching the final in the doubles’ draw was Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigal Spears with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Flavia Pennetta and Sam Stosur in less than an hour. The Americans only lost 14 points on serve all match and were broken just once in nine service games while winning nearly half of the points off their opponents serve and breaking them four times in eight service games. They now face Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Rodionova in the final.

Singles Draw

This is the route for each American to the main draw if the higher rankings win. Green means the American on the left would be the higher ranked player, red means they would be lower ranked. Bold on an athlete indicates that match has been completed. Matches highlighted in yellow are on today’s schedule. Click to expand.

Dubai Tennis Championships - Singles - 2-22-14

The draw for Venus Williams won’t have her face a top ten player in Dubai at all. Still with two top 12 opponents and only playing players ranked ahead of her it’s been a very strong showing for her in Dubai.

The Matchups

Venus Williams and Alize Cornet will be meeting for the fourth time when they play. Williams is 3-0 and won 6-3, 6-3 in their last meeting, a first round matchup in the Australian Open last year. They met in the round of 16 in Dubai five years ago when Williams won 6-3, 6-2.

Doubles Draw

This is the route for each American to the main draw if the higher rankings win. Green means the American on the left would be the higher ranked player, red means they would be lower ranked. Bold on an athlete indicates that match has been completed. Matches highlighted in yellow are on today’s schedule. Click to expand.

Dubai Tennis Championships - Doubles - 2-22-14Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigal Spears are the higher ranked team again in the final as their opponents, Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Rodionova knocked out the highest ranked team left: Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Safarova.

The Matchups

The only previous meeting between Kops-Jones/Spears and Kudryavtseva/Rodionova was a very tight first round loss in Rome last May, 7-5, 7-5.

Tuesday Schedule

All times ET

  • 8 AM – Raquel Kops-Jones/Abigail Spears vs. Alla Kudryavtseva/Anastasia Rodionova on Center Court – Kudryavtseva/Rodionova lead 1-0 all-time

TV Schedule

Tennis Channel will be on air with Center Court from 10 AM-6 PM ET and should have coverage of the singles final.

Sochi 2014 – USA Gold Medal Winner #8 – Maddie Bowman

If it feels like most of the US medals are coming in the same event over and over again it’s because they kind of have. Four slopestyle events in Sochi: three gold medals. And now four halfpipe events in Sochi: three gold medals.

Maddie Bowman is the latest winner for the US as she took home the gold in the inaugural women’s ski halfpipe event in Sochi. Bowman is just 20-years old (turning 20 just a month ago) with a very bright future in front of her. She’s already the two-time defending champion in the SuperPipe in the X-Games and now she’ll be the defending champion in the Olympics at a young age. With a few days left to wrap things up she’s the youngest gold medalist in Sochi for the US.

Bowman hails from South Lake Tahoe, California. Despite the X-Games golds she’s been fairly unknown to most of the population. She’s even under 4,000 twitter followers still. That attention deficit will change a bit now that she’s an Olympic gold medalist and come four years from now there will be expectations. If we learned anything last night though it’s that Bowman doesn’t shy away from big moments at all.

Serena and Venus Williams Both in Dubai Semifinals

The US had a really strong day in Dubai as both #1 Serena and Venus Williams reached the semifinals in the singles draw while Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigal Spears are in the doubles semifinals.

Venus Williams took out Flavia Pannetta in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. Venus was broken four times but broke Pannetta six times as Williams won a majority of points on both her serve and Pannetta’s serve. Venus faces #8 Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinals.

Lisa Raymond and Shuai Zhang (China) were knocked out by Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Safarova 6-3, 7-5 in the quarterfinals. The match might not be as close as it looks as the Raymond/Zhang only won 18 points off their opponents serve and won 15 less total points.

Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigal Spears took on #1 Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci thumped them soundly 6-4, 6-1 in an impressive outing. The Americans won 56% of the points off the Italians first serve and broke them five times in eight games. They’ll face Flavia Pennetta and Sam Stosur in the semifinals on Friday.

Finally #1 Serena Williams took on #5 Jelena Jankovic and routed her 6-2, 6-2 in and hour and 16 minutes. Williams was strong on her serve (won 65% of her service points) and tore into the 24 second service points that Jankovic served up by winning 16 of them. Williams won the match by breaking her five times in eight service games. Serena now faces Alize Cornet on Friday in the semifinals.

Singles Draw

This is the route for each American to the main draw if the higher rankings win. Green means the American on the left would be the higher ranked player, red means they would be lower ranked. Dubai Tennis Championships - Singles - 2-21-14

The draw for Serena Williams was lightened a bit when Alize Cornet knocked off Carla Suarez Navarro. Serena can make the final in Dubai with only one match against a top 22 player in the world, Venus is playing her third so far against Wozniacki.

February 20th – Sochi 2014 – Daily Review

The US women came oh so close to gold against Canada but it didn’t mean the US didn’t win gold on Thursday. They did win gold for the fourth straight day. The last time that happened? I’m not sure if it ever did but certainly not in 2006 or 2010!

Figure Skating

Events:

  • Ladies’ free program

All three US ladies had good short programs but the top skaters were all a significant amount better. That meant the US ladies needed strong routines but also some help from other skaters. Polina Edmunds, was first to go and put up a solid but not spectacular 122.21. She was ninth best in the free skate and finished ninth overall with a 183.25. Gracie Gold was next and skated fairly well. Still there were flaws and her 136.90 was only fifth best in the free skate. She finished fourth with a 205.53. Ashley Wagner was unable to capture the magic either. Her routine looked okay but had a lot of technical problems and she scored a 127.99, seventh best, and finished in seventh with a total of 193.20.

Third place came in at 216.73 so even with really really good programs that would have been a hard score for the US ladies to match. The US leaves Sochi with just two medals but a lot of young talents on the ladies’ side especially.

  • Polina Edmunds –  Finished 9th with a score of 183.25. In the free program scored a 122.21, 9th best.
  • Gracie Gold – Finished 4th with a score of 205.53. In the free program scored a 136.90, 5th best.
  • Ashley Wagner – Finished 7th with a score of 193.20. In the free program scored a 127.99, 7th best.

USA Women’s Sevens Rugby Set For Round Three in Brazil

Last weekend was a big challenge for the US in the pool as they faced two of the top four in the world. After a disappointing first day with blowout losses to Canada and Australia they were more competitive with Canada on Sunday morning before winning their final two games over England and Spain to grab the plate.

Now in Brazil the US can look at more favorable group draw and hope to have a winning record this weekend. The US will start things off with England (tied with the US and Spain for fifth in the season standings). It’ll be the third tournament in a row that the two have met with England winning 12-10 in Dubai and the US winning 19-5 last weekend. Next up for the US will be a really difficult matchup with current standings leader New Zealand. They met back in pool play in Dubai with the US losing 31-0. New Zealand dominated Canada in the final last weekend 36-0. The final pool match will be against Ireland (tied for 12th in the standings). Ireland was the first opponent in pool play for the US in Dubai and the Irish tied the Americans 12-12.

It certainly looks like a pool where 2-1 is doable if the US plays as well as they did on Sunday in Atlanta. You may or may not be able to find live video on wsws.irb.com. If you can’t it’s because the rights in the US are held by Universal Sports and you can’t stream it without having access to that TV channel.

Sochi 2014 – USA Gold Medal Winner #7 – Ted Ligety

Of the first six gold medals won by the US, only one was awarded to someone who had medaled in the Olympics before (Meryl Davis and Charlie White: bronze in the team event here in Sochi, silver in Vancouver in the ice dance). The story for most of the winners has been about someone finally making it big on the biggest stage in the world.

That doesn’t really apply to Ted Ligety. Yes it’d been a long time since he was on top, but this was the 2006 Olympic gold medalist in the combined event. He also went and won the super-G, the combined, and the giant slalom in the last World Championships.
