On Monday the US grabbed their first gold since Thursday and had a couple of historic firsts. Several events got canceled due to the weather and the US hockey team won a medal, we just won’t know which one until Thursday.
Alpine Skiing
Events:
- Men’s Slalom Run 1
- *Men’s Slalom Run 2
Ted Ligety was the first to go for the US in the first run and his 47.56 placed him sixth and left him in medal contention for round two. David Chodounsky was the next to go for the US but he took a DNF. The final American was Nolan Kasper who finished in 48.70 to find himself 18th after the first run.
In run two Kasper finished in 55.52, the tenth best time of the run, and his total time of 1:44.22 placed him 13th overall. Ligety had a good chance to medal but his hopes were dashed when he got off track and took a DNF.

Biathlon

The men’s 4×7.5km relay started off well with Lowell Bailey shooting perfectly and putting the US in fourth just 17.3 seconds behind the leader. Things derailed quickly when Russell Currier took eight shots on round one of shooting and only hit two of the five targets. The three penalty laps killed the US chances and after his two reloads on round two the US was in 15th, 2:21 behind the leader. Sean Doherty had to reload three times and handed it off in 15th, 3:45.7 back. Leif Nordgren needed four reloads and brought the US home in 16th, 5:23.2 behind the leaders.

Bobsleigh

The margins were tight on Saturday in the bobsleigh. The first US team of Steven Holcomb, Steven Langton, Curtis Tomasevicz, and Christopher Fogt were third in the first heat at 54.89, but they were just 0.07 seconds off the lead. The second team of Nick Cunningham, Johnny Quinn, Justin Olsen, and Dallas Robinson was 14th with a time of 55.61, 0.79 seconds off the lead.
In heat two Holcomb, Langton, Tomasevicz, and Fogt were ninth in the heat at 55.47, 0.34 seconds behind the fastest, and they found themselves in fourth, 0.17 seconds off the lead after the first day. Cunningham, Quinn, Olsen, and Robinson were 12th fastest at 55.48, 0.35 seconds behind the best. They are now in 11th, 0.90 seconds behind the leaders.

In he women’s 30km mass start the top American was Liz Stephen who finished in 1:14:11.8, 24th place and 3:06.6 behind the winner. Holly Brooks was the second best American as she came in 27th in a time of 1:14:58.3. Kikkan Randall came next in 28th in 1:15:10.7. Finally Jessica Diggins finished 40th in a time of 1:18:13. Ice Hockey

- Men’s Bronze Medal Game – USA vs. Finland
It was a brutal performance on Saturday as the US was routed 5-0 by Finland in the gold medal game. The US did have 27 shots on goal but couldn’t get one past the goalie for the second straight game. Patrick Kane had two penalty shots for the US but couldn’t convert and the US left Sochi on a miserable note.

Justin Reiter was the lone American competing and his event did not last long. He was DSQ’d on his first run and that ended his chances of moving on to the next round.

Speed Skating

- Men’s Team Pursuit D Final
- Women’s Team Pursuit C Final
Brian Hansen, Jonathan Kuck, and Joey Mantia faced France in the men’s team pursuit D Final. The US team finished in 3:46.50, nearly five seconds ahead of the French, to place seventh overall.
Brittany Bowe, Heather Richardson, and Jilleanne Rookard faced Canada in the women’s team pursuit C Final. The US finished in 3:03.77 but that was over a second and half too late as the US placed sixth.
