Previous 2014 Algarve Cup Coverage
The Algarve Cup has been a huge disappointment for the US. After ending a two year streak of games without a loss the US is now on a losing streak of two games. This time the opponent was Denmark and this time the US lost 5-3. ‘
The stats coming out of this game are stunning. It was the first time EVER that the US has allowed five goals. It was the first time in 13 years that the US has lost two straight games. It was the first time that the US has lost by two goals in almost six years.
The US allowed three goals from the 24th minute to the 39th minute of the first half. They rallied in the second half behind goals from Christen Press, Sydney Leroux, and Megan Rapinoe and had it back to 4-3 with 22 minutes left. They never could equalize and a stoppage time goal gave us the final margin. USSoccer.com has a full recap.
In the other final group stage match Japan beat Sweden 2-1 to finish 1st in the group and advance to the final. The US ended up last in the group and is the only team in the group that didn’t get a win. The US will now face North Korea, the team that won Group C (the non-top eight teams), on Wednesday morning. If the US doesn’t win that one… oh boy.
