Rio 2016 – Judo Preview

Judo has been a part of the games since 1972 and women’s judo was added in 1992. Ever since women’s judo was added there has been an equal number of men’s and women’s events. Judo will be contested in the Barra zone in the Carioca Arena 2. Qualifying was based on the IJF rankings at the end of May with athletes qualifying directly instead of earning spots for their country.

The Team:

This year’s team is made up of six athletes, split three apiece between the men and women. Four are Olympic veterans with one making his third appearance. Travis Stevens is the oldest member of the team at 30 while Colton Brown is the youngest at 24.

Past Results:

The US is not a big judo medal winner with just 12 all time, 13th most, and their first gold coming in 2012. This current crop of judoka though offers some real expectations for success as Kayla Harrison took that first ever US gold in 2012 and Marti Malloy took a bronze in London as well.
