Five more medals for the US on Friday pushed them to 105 total, passing their London total and now within five of their total from Beijing. The US medal winning was diverse with golds in a track relay, BMX, and water polo including great stories in track and BMX of gold medalists who thought their Olympic dreams might have been over.

August 18th Recap:
Basketball
The US men beat Spain on Thursday in the semifinals in yet another game where they were unable to run away from their opponents but were safely in the lead for most of the game. The US led Spain by nine, six, nine, and six at the end of the four quarters. Klay Thompson led the US with 22 points while Kevin Durant had 14 points eight points and Kyrie Irving had 13 points. DeAndre Jordan had a monster game with 16 rebounds and four blocks as DeMarcus Cousins fouled out before the fourth quarter.
The US will now face Serbia for the gold medal on Sunday after they upset Australia on Friday. Serbia was just 2-3 in group play but has won three straight now in Rio. Serbia had not been to the Olympics since 2004 and was part of Serbia and Montenegro at that point. They were the runner-up at the Basketball World Cup in 2014 losing to the US 129-92 in the final. The men’s and women’s finals in Rio are both rematches from 2014.
Boxing
Claressa Shields advanced to the gold medal bout in the women’s middleweight division as she beat Dariga Shakimova 3-0 (40-36, 39-37, 40-36) in the semifinals. Shields continues her dominance of the sport and will face Nouchka Fontijn for gold on Sunday. That will be a rematch of the final from the world championships in May.
Cycling
The big story on the BMX track on Friday was a great story and a gold medal for Connor Fields. Fields was in the final in Rio at 19 but crashed and finished seventh. He’d positioned himself to be a medal contender in Rio until a broken wrist in April left his Olympics in doubt. After surgery and rehab he was able to get healthy for the Olympics and on Friday despite not winning any of his semifinal runs when he hit the finish line in the final he became an Olympic gold medalist. Nicholas Long also made the men’s final where he finished fourth. Long grabbed the last spot from his semifinal heat winning a tiebreaker against fellow teammate Corben Sharrah.
On the women’s side both Alise Post and Brooke Crain had no problem reaching the final but it was Post celebrating in the end as she claimed silver in women’s BMX after a fantastic ride in the final.
Diving
David Boudia and Steele Johnson both advanced to the men’s 10m platform diving semifinal after top-18 finishes in the preliminary round on Friday. Their stories were quite different however with Boudia finishing fourth and Johnson 18th. Boudia had one poor dive but even with a great dive replacing it he probably wouldn’t have been top three. If he is to medal on Saturday it will likely take exceptional diving from him and perhaps some help with mistakes from the other top divers. Johnson barely got into the semifinal as he grabbed the last spot when the final driver who had a chance to beat him wasn’t able to post a clean dive. Johnson could certainly reach the final with a strong semifinal performance but there will not be nearly as much room to make the mistakes he did on Friday.
Equestrian
There would be no jumping individual medal for the US on Friday as one-by-one the US riders found themselves eliminated from medal contention. Lucy Davis was the first US rider out as she took 12 faults in her first run and was outside of the top 20 in 32nd and didn’t advance to the second half of the final. McLain Ward also took himself out of the running with four faults in his first run. It was a small enough number to get him into the second half of the final but with 11 of those carrying over zero faults from the first run it was pretty clear he wouldn’t be able to medal. Ward did put together a clean second run but six riders went perfect in both including American Kent Farrington. Farrington got into a jump-off for the medals with the other five but after taking eight faults he was left off the medal stand.
Golf
The women’s golf event had moving day on Friday as one American went up the leaderboard and the other two moved the wrong way. Gerina Piller was -6 entering Friday but posted a 68 to go under par for the third straight day and move to -9 and a tie for second. Stacy Lewis had been in second but a 76 on Friday means she’s now in a tie for 8th but five strokes behind the medalists at -4. Lexi Thompson always was going to need a big day to get into medal contention but she went the wrong with a 76 of her own. She’s +2 and tied for 31st entering the final round on Saturday.
Gymnastics
Laura Zeng nearly gave the US their first EVER individual top ten finish in rhythmic gymnastics. Zeng had three strong routine scores on Friday with 17.666 with the ball, 17.650 with the hoop, and 17.700 with the club. But it all came down to her ribbon score where she had a 16.825, certainly not awful but enough of a drop to cost her. Zeng missed the top ten and a spot in the final by 0.141 points. Her 11th place finish was still an American best but it was tough to watch such a small margin keep her from the bigger stage on Saturday.
Modern Pentathlon
The women’s modern pentathlon wrapped up on Friday with neither American in medal contention. Margaux Isaksen was 23rd in the 200m freestyle swim at with a time of 2:19.91 for 281 points, 14th in fencing with an 18-17 record and a bonus point on Friday for 209 points, tenth in show jumping with seven obstacle penalties for 293 points, and 27th in the running/shooting combined with a time of 13:23.90 for 497 points. She finished 20th overall with 1280 total points.
Isabella Isaksen was 23rd in the 200m freestyle swim at with a time of 2:20.20 for 280 points, eighth in fencing with an 20-15 record and a bonus point on Friday for 221 points, 17th in show jumping with ten obstacle penalties and five time penalties for 285 points, and 33rd in the running/shooting combined with a time of 13:51.96 for 469 points. She finished 25th overall with 1255 total points.
Taekwondo
The US had two shots to medal in taekwondo on Friday but weren’t able to get onto the medal stand. Steven Lopez had the better shot in the men’s -80kg division going four times on Friday and moving as far as the bronze medal match before ultimately losing. Lopez opened with a 7-4 win in the round of 16 against Albert Gaun before losing 9-2 to eventual silver medalist Lutalo Muhammad in the quarterfinals. When Muhammad made the final Lopez got a repechage chance and faced Hayder Shkara in a repechage match. No one scored but Lopez had more contacts that didn’t count as scores so he advanced to go for bronze. His bronze medal match would be his second tough loss of the day losing 14-5 to Oussama Oueslati who was really impressive in winning bronze.
Pagie McPherson didn’t get to compete as long after a 6-5 round of 16 loss against Farida Azizova. McPherson had the lead but couldn’t hold on to it in the third period as Azizova came back to win. When Azizova failed to reach the final McPherson’s Olympics were over.
Track and Field
The men’s 50km race walk was on Friday and John Nunn finished 43rd in 4:16:12, 35:14 behind the winner. The women’s 20km race walk was held as well with Maria Michta-Coffey finishing 22nd in 1:33:36, 5:01 behind the winner, and Miranda Melville finishing 34th in 1:35:48, 7:13 behind the winner. The women’s pole vault final unfortunately had a sick defending gold medalist Jennifer Suhr who wasn’t at her best and finished in a tie for seventh after only clearing 4.60m. Sandi Morris picked things up for the US though and was one of five left going to 4.85m. Morris didn’t clear anything after 4.60m on the first try but was consistently clearing them on second attempts. When she cleared 4.85m on her second try she was one of only two to clear that height and stay alive. In the end Morris faced one final attempt at 4.90m with a gold medal there for her if she cleared it. She came very close but grazed it slightly and it finally tumbled as she started to fall and she finished with the silver.
On the track there were preliminaries in the men’s and women’s 4x400m relays. The US women’s team of Courtney Okolo, Taylor Ellis-Watson, Francena McCorory, and Phyllis Francis won their heat to advance to the final on Saturday night at 9 PM while the men’s team of Arman Hall, Tony McQuay, Kyle Clemons, and David Verburg were second in their heat and are into the final on Saturday night at 9:35 PM.
In track finals on Saturday night Shelby Houlihan placed 11th in the women’s 5000m before things turned to the always enthralling 4x100m relay finals. The women went first with Tianna Bartoletta, Allyson Felix, English Gardner, and Tori Bowie running for the US. The US had no problems with their handoff and cruised home with a gold medal for the second straight Olympics. On the men’s side the team of Mike Rodgers, Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay, and Trayvon Bromell seemingly won bronze until they were disqualified for an illegal opening handoff. After review it was clear, Gatlin touched the baton as Rodgers was handing off before the baton had entered the handoff zone. A clear DQ and the US once again failed to win a medal in the 4x100m relay.
Volleyball
The US men lost to Italy on Friday in a fantastic and thrilling semifinal matchup. The US lost the opening set 28-30 but won a close second set 28-25. They dominated the third set 25-9 but couldn’t close it out in the fourth set as Italy forced a 5th set with a 22-25 win. Italy was clearly the better team in the final set as they eliminated the US from gold medal contention at 9-15.
The US will now face Russia for bronze on Sunday morning at 8:30 AM. Russia went 4-1 in the pool stage so they should certainly be a tough test for the American as they try to medal. Russia won gold in 2012 and were the only team to beat the US in pool play in London. Russia finished 5th at the World Championship in 2014. These two sides met in the World League this summer in Dallas with the US sweeping the Russians.
Water Polo
The USA women’s water polo team wrapped up a dominant Olympic showing as they completed a clean sweep of the event easily handling Italy in the gold medal match 12-5. The US won every match in Rio by at least four goals to win gold for the second straight Olympics. Kiley Neushul led the US with three goals in the final match while Maggie Steffens led the Olympics with 17 goals.
Wrestling
The US was stunned on Friday as 74kg gold medal favorite Jordan Burroughs not only lost but went 1-2 in Rio and didn’t even wrestle for bronze. Burroughs opened with an 8-3 win over Augusto Midana in the round of 16 but ran into trouble in his second match as he lost to Aniuar Geduev 3-2 in a tightly contested match. Burroughs got a repechage chance but lost his first match 11-1 to Bekzod Abdurakhmonov as he was shutout of the medals. Daniel Dennis in the men’s 57kg division didn’t do any better with an opening 11-0 loss to Vladimir Dubov in the round of 16.
August 19th Preview:
All times ET!! All events should be available online via NBC’s Olympic website and apps (assuming a cable package that gives you access). What is live on NBC in ET/CT is usually tape delayed in MT/PT. Yell at NBC for their ridiculous decision to tape delay an Olympics happening one hour east of ET, it’s insane. Schedules of competition and of course TV coverage subject to change, especially if the US competitors unexpectedly advance in a competition.
Basketball
The US women face Spain in the gold medal game on Saturday at 2:30 PM. Spain finished second in the group stage behind the US at 4-1 with their only loss to the Americans 103-63 in the second game in Rio. Getting to the gold medal game is a nice accomplishment for Spain who missed the Olympics in 2012 but this is also the same matchup as we saw in the World Championship final two years ago when the US beat Spain 77-64 and Spain had a 5-1 overall record.
NBC, NOT NBCSN!!!, will have LIVE coverage of the game.
Boxing
Shakur Stevenson will face Robeisy Ramirez in the men’s bantamweight final on Saturday at 1:15 PM. Stevenson has only fought twice in Rio after his opponent pulled out of their semifinal bout. Ramirez is a gold medalist from 2012 who has plenty of experience. The matchup should be an exciting one with the gold medal on the line.
USA will have the bout LIVE.
Cycling
We’re into the final discipline in cycling in Rio as the mountain bike events are Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is the women’s cross country event with Lea Davison and Chloe Woodruff in the field for the US. Davison was a surprise silver medalist at the UCI Mountain Bike Cross Country World Championships where a last lap push took her to the medal stand.
NBCSN will have tape delayed coverage between 2 and 4:30 PM.
Diving
David Boudia and Steele Johnson continue to compete in the men’s 10m platform diving competition with the semifinal on Saturday morning at 10 AM. Boudia and Johnson would need a top-12 finish to move into the final later in the day at 3:30 PM. Boudia was fourth on Friday and seems to be likely to make the final and a potential medal contender. Johnson on the other hand grabbed the last spot into the semifinal and will need to shown improvement in his consistency to make the final.
The diving will be covered in primetime on NBC between 8 PM and 12 AM.
Golf
Entering the final round there seems to be one American with a clear shot at a medal and two others probably out of it. Gerina Piller is -9 and tied for second and will tee off at 7:44 AM as a clear medal contender. Stacy Lewis may still have a medal chance but coming into the final day in a tie for 8th and five strokes behind the medalists at -4 that’s a big ask. Lewis will tee off at 7 AM. Lexi Thompson went the wrong way on Friday and is out of medal contention. She’s +2 and tied for 31st entering the final round on Saturday where she’ll tee off at 6 AM.
Golf Channel will have LIVE coverage from 6 AM to 1 PM.
Gymnastics
The rhythmic gymnastics team qualifying round is on Saturday. The US team of Kiana Eide, Alisa Kano, Natalie McGeiffer, Monica Rokhman, and Kristen Shaldybin will be competing with the ribbons first at 9 AM and then the clubs and hoops at 11:40 AM. The US will be the 12th of 14 teams to go in reach rotation. If they can finish in the top eight they’ll move to the final on Sunday and be the first US team to place in the top eight.
USA will have LIVE coverage of qualifying between 9 AM and 10:30 AM with NBCSN covering it on delay between 2 and 4:30 PM.
Modern Pentathlon
The men’s modern pentathlon event wraps up on Saturday. Nathan Schrimsher will face his 200m freestyle swim at 11:20 AM. He will be in the fencing bonus round at 1 PM where he’ll get at least one bout and if he wins face the next higher ranked fencer from the ranking round with each win being a bonus for their standings until he loses. The show jumping event comes at 2:30 PM with the finale, the run/shoot combined event, at 5 PM. The finale is easy to follow as they hold the athletes who are trailing the leader a set amount of time that corresponds to how far behind they are in the competition. This sets up a simple first over the finish line final.
USA has delayed coverage between 9:15 PM and 12 AM.
Taekwondo
The US has two more competing in the taekwondo competitions on Saturday. Jackie Galloway is up first in the women’s +67kg division with an 8 AM bout in the round of 16 against Crystal Weeks. Galloway would move on to the quarterfinals at 2:15 PM, the semifinals at 4:15 PM, and the gold match at 9:15 PM. Stephen Lambdin is up at 8:15 AM with a +80kg bout in the round of 16 against Maicon Siqueira. Lambdin would move on to the quarterfinals at 2 PM, the semifinals at 4 PM, and the gold match at 9 PM. If either one loses to a finalist they’d be in the repechage bracket with two bronze medal matches in each weight class.
MSNBC will have delayed coverage between 12 and 2:30 PM and USA has delayed coverage between 9:15 PM and 12 AM.
Track and Field
Saturday is all about finals in track and field with everything but the men’s marathon done after today. Inika McPherson, Vashti Cunningham, and Chaunte Lowe give the US three chances in the women’s high jump where 15 women are left. The high jump begins at 7:30 PM and it will be interesting to see if Cunningham can raise her game after struggling to clear heights in the qualification event. On the track Ben Blankenship and Matthew Centrowitz Jr. go for gold in the men’s 1500m at 8 PM, Kate Grace is the only American in the women’s 800m final at 8:15 PM, and then three Americans will try and stage an upset in the men’s 5000m final at 8:30 PM as Bernard Lagat, Hassan Mead, and Paul Chelimo will all participate.
The evening wraps up with the women’s 4x400m relay at 9 PM and the men’s 4x400m relay at 9:35 PM. The lineups have not been announced for the relays yet.
NBC will have LIVE coverage in primetime from 8 PM-12 AM of the stadium track events.
Triathlon
The women’s triathlon will be on Saturday at 10 AM with Gwen Jorgensen, Sarah True, and Katie Zaferes all competing for the US. Jorgensen will be the favorite to win gold as she has dominated the World Triathlon Series over the last few years. True is also a medal contender after finishing fourth in London.
NBC will have LIVE coverage of the triathlon.
Volleyball
The US women were upset on Thursday in a semifinal rematch with Serbia and now face the Netherlands in the bronze medal match on Saturday at 12 PM. These two teams played in the pool earlier in the Olympics with the US winning but the match going five sets. The Dutch have only been to the Olympics twice (1992 and 1996) and have never medaled. The US met them in pool play in the World Championship in 2014 and swept that match en route to the world title while the Dutch finished tied for 13th. They met again this summer in Hong Kong with the US taking it 3-1 in pool play of the World Grand Prix and again in the second stage of pool play in Thailand where the USsewpt them. Certainly a team on the rise this should be a fun match for bronze.
You can catch this one LIVE on NBC.
Wrestling
The US will have two more wrestlers going on Saturday. J’den Cox competes in the men’s 86kg event and will start off in the round of 16 against a qualifying round winner. Trevel Dlagnev is in the men’s 125kg division and he’ll start off with Jamaladdin Magomedov in the round of 16. The quarterfinal, and semifinal matches follow in the morning. If anyone loses to a finalist in their division they are in the repechage bracket later in the day. The repechage matches and medal matches are held later in the day starting at 3 PM.
USA has delayed coverage in their window between 12:15 and 2:15 PM and between 8 and 9:15 PM.
