Back-to-Back Losses for US Women’s Soccer… That Doesn’t Happen Much

Previous 2014 Algarve Cup Coverage

The Algarve Cup has been a huge disappointment for the US. After ending a two year streak of games without a loss the US is now on a losing streak of two games. This time the opponent was Denmark and this time the US lost 5-3. ‘

The stats coming out of this game are stunning. It was the first time EVER that the US has allowed five goals. It was the first time in 13 years that the US has lost two straight games. It was the first time that the US has lost by two goals in almost six years.

The US allowed three goals from the 24th minute to the 39th minute of the first half. They rallied in the second half behind goals from Christen Press, Sydney Leroux, and Megan Rapinoe and had it back to 4-3 with 22 minutes left. They never could equalize and a stoppage time goal gave us the final margin. USSoccer.com has a full recap.

In the other final group stage match Japan beat Sweden 2-1 to finish 1st in the group and advance to the final. The US ended up last in the group and is the only team in the group that didn’t get a win. The US will now face North Korea, the team that won Group C (the non-top eight teams), on Wednesday morning. If the US doesn’t win that one… oh boy.

San Jose Earthquakes Set for CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinal vs. Toluca

The 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League is back underway this week with the quarterfinals getting underway. This competition involves the top teams from North and Central America as well as the Caribbean. Three Mexican teams and three American teams made the quarterfinals and all are facing each other this week.

The first one to get underway is the San Jose Earthquakes against Toluca. Toluca was 4-0 in the group stage last fall out scoring their opponents 15-4 while San Jose went 2-2 with only four goals scored and two allowed. This is the first time the Earthquakes have made the Champions League, they played in the CONCACAF Champions Cup three times from 2002-2004 but never advanced past the semifinals. They have only played a Mexican team once, in 2002, when they won lost 3-0 away at Pachuca before winning 1-0 at home but losing on aggregate.

Toluca is a city just west of Mexico City, the club has been in the Champions League twice before, 2009-10 and 2010-11 advancing to the semifinals once and the quarterfinals the second time. They have only made one trip to the US before, drawing 2-2 at the Columbus Crew in 2010 before winning 3-2 back in Mexico.

Toluca finished fifth in Liga MX in the fall Apertura Season and reached the semifinals of the playoffs. They are second in the spring Clausura Season after 10 of 17 games. The San Jose Earthquakes are yet to open the 2014 MLS season but were 14-11-9 last year and finished sixth in the West missing out on the playoffs on goal differential.

This game will be on Fox Sports 2 (FS2) at 10 PM ET.

Sochi 2014 Speed Skating Recap: And This Is Where It All Went Wrong…

There is probably no discipline in Sochi that was more disappointing for the US. Zero medals. Zero. And this all in an event where the US is winning events and competing regularly at the top on the World Cup circuit right now. What happened? Who knows… We do know that the women have been further away from competing in the past than the men but both genders weren’t close in Sochi with the best individual finishes being 7th place!

Men’s 500m

Mens 500m

Shani Davis, Tucker Fredricks, and Mitchell Whitmore all finished in the same range, 24th, 26th, and 27th. Never ever ever before had the top man for the US been lower than 12th.

Women’s 500m

The women’s 500m went better with Heather Richardson eighth. Yet Richardson is second in the World Cup standings…. eighth was not great. It is the second best finish though for the US since 1994.

Shani Davis and Brian Hansen were more competitive in the men’s 1000m finishing eighth and ninth. Still the US had someone in the top seven every year since 1992 and had medaled in three straight Olympics. No third straight gold for Davis and no medal at all was disappointing.

Sloane Stephens Advances to Round of 16 at BNP Paribas Open, Two American Women Favorites to Reach Quarterfinals

Previous BNP Paribas Open Coverage

#17 Sloane Stephens advanced in an impressive straight sets win over #13 Ana Ivanovic and the US now has two women favored to advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s draw. Stephens continues to show up for big matches and tournaments so no one is really surprised that she’d be playing well in this one.

As mentioned earlier, #17 Sloane Stephens took out #11 Ana Ivanovic 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the third round on Monday. Stephens now gets a bit of a break as Alisa Kleybanova has advanced to the round of 16. While she is a player who was ranked as high as #20 before battling  Hodgkin’s Lymphoma for a few years she was never ranked as high as Stephens is and it would be a major disappointment for Sloane to lose to her.

In the other round of 16 matchup on Tuesday Lauren Davis will take on on Casey Dellacqua. This is an interesting matchup between two players who have had some of the nicer upsets so far in this tournament. Davis is a slightly higher ranked player and with her playing on American soil and having knocked off Azarenka I think she’d be disappointed to get knocked out here.

Looking ahead to the quarterfinals Stephens would be the higher ranked player as her best possible opponent would be #20 Flavia Pennetta, so for Sloane to reach a semifinal here in Indian Wells seems like a good goal at this point.

Sochi 2014 Snowboard Recap: Some Disappointments For the US, But Can You Complain About Three Gold Medals?

There’s no doubt that some of the snowboarding events in Sochi were big disappointments for the US. The US didn’t get their athlete into the elimination rounds of the parallel giant slalom or slalom events. Shaun White only competed in the halfpipe and couldn’t win his third straight gold. Yet they also won three gold medals and two bronze medals so the Olympics certainly weren’t all bad.

Men’s Parallel Giant Slalom

Mens Parallel Giant Slalom

Justin Reiter was the only competitor for the US in the parallel giant slalom. Reiter was off the pace on his first run on the red course and tried to get back in contention on the blue course but wasn’t quick enough as he placed 24th and failed to qualify for the 16-man knockout round. It was the first time in the five Olympics the event has been held without a top ten finish for the US.

Justin Reiter seemed to do better in the parallel slalom at first as he finished the red course in good shape. Then it was announced he was disqualified for touching a gate and he was eliminated. This was the first parallel slalom at the Olympics.

Men’s Halfpipe

Mens Halfpipe

In the men’s halfpipe Shaun White, Danny Davis, and Greg Bretz all advanced to the final. Once there they disappointed as both Davis and Bretz couldn’t put down a clean run and White’s best effort fell short in 4th with a 90.25. White was the top American in the event for the third straight Olympics but for the first time since the first event in Nagano the US didn’t win the event and for the first time ever they didn’t medal.

On the women’s side the US was much stronger in the halfpipe. Arielle Gold crashed and injured herself in training and couldn’t start but the three who did all had a lot of success. Hannah Teter just missed out on medaling for the third straight Olympics as she placed fourth and was just 0.25 points behind Kelly Clark who finished third with a 90.50. The US grabbed a gold as well with Kaitlyn Farrington winning by 0.25 points herself over Torah Bright. It was the third time in four Olympics that the US has won the event and made it five for five on medaling.

The US made it two-for-two in grabbing the first golds in the slopestyle when Jamie Anderson took first for the US on the women’s side. The US advanced two of their four athletes in the snowboard cross from the 1/8 finals with Nick Baumgartner and Nate Holland finishing fourth in their 1/8 finals. Trevor Jacob got eliminated in the semifinals but placed ninth overall while Alex Deibold used thirds in the 1/8 final, quarterfinal, and semifinal to squeak by each time.
