February 17th – Sochi 2014 – Daily Preview

What’s on tap today? Eight disciplines and competition in nine events with six gold medals up for grabs. In today: Freestyle skiing and ski jumping. Out today: Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and speed skating.

All times below are ET.

Biathlon

Events: The men’s 15km mass-start will begin at 1 AM. The 30-man field will include only two Americans, Lowell Bailey and Tim Burke as they have the final chance to earn an individual medal for the US men in Sochi.

The women’s 12.5km mass start at 10 AM also features 30 in the field. The only American is Susan Dunklee.

When:

Bobsleigh

Events: Entering heat three at 9:30 AM on Monday the US has one team in medal contention and two further back hoping for a lot of mistakes. There is no start order listed yet on sochi2014.com for this race. Team 1 of Steven Holcomb and Steven Langton are in third, team 2 (Cory Butner and Christopher Fogt) are 11th. The final US team, United State 3, is Nick Cunningham and Dallas Robinson is in 13th. The fourth and final heat will be at 11:05 AM with a start order the opposite of the total times.

When:

  • Two-man Heat 3 – 9:30 AM
  • *Two-man Heat 4 – 11:05 AM

Curling

Events: The US women are eliminated at 1-7 and will wrap up the Olympics with a 12 AM game against Korea. The US men are 2-6 and play their final game of the Olympics at 5 AM against Switzerland.

When:

  • Women’s Round Robin – USA vs. Korea – 12 AM
  • Men’s Round Robin – USA vs. Switzerland – 5 AM

Figure Skating

Events: All three US couples had strong short dances and are in good position for the free dance. Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani go second in group three (12th overall) with Madison Chock and Evan Bates going two behind them in 14th. Meryl Davis and Charlie White will skate last, 20th, and know what they need to do to win a medal.

When:

  • *Ice dance free dance – 10 AM

Freestyle Skiing

Events: 21 men will take to the hill for the aerials qualification on Monday with just one America in the field. Things start with the first round of qualification at 8:45 AM. The 23 men will each take one run with the best six scores moving into the final. The other 17 will try again at 9:30 AM with the six best scores again moving into the final. The final will begin at 12:30 PM with 12 men. They each take a run with the top eight moving into the next round. Round two at 12:55 PM will narrow it down to four men who will go for the medals at 1:12 PM.

The lone American in the field is Mac Bohonnon will be going eighth for the US..

  • Men’s Aerials Qualification 1 – 8:45 AM
  • Men’s Aerials Qualification 2 – 9:30 AM
  • Men’s Aerials Final 1 – 12:30 PM
  • Men’s Aerials Final 2 – 12:55 PM
  • *Men’s Aerials Final 3 – 1:12 PM

Ice Hockey

Events: The US women are back in action on Monday and instead of facing Finland in this game they are taking on Sweden. Theoretically Finland is supposed to be a better team than Sweden but that doesn’t really matter right now. A solid performance in this one is all that matters making sure they do reach the gold medal game. Sweden can’t be overlooked.

When:

  • Women’s Semifinals – USA vs. Sweden – 7:30 AM

Ski Jumping

Events: The men are back in action in ski jumping on Friday with the team event beginning at 12:15 PM. The field is 12 teams and the US has to be in eighth or better after everyone  has gone through the first round of jumps to advance. Peter Frenette will jump first for the US followed by Nicholas FairallAnders Johnson, and Nick Alexander. If the US does advance the final round will be at 1:22 PM.

When: 

  • Men’s Team 1st Round – 12:15 PM
  • *Men’s Team Final Round – 1:22 PM

Snowboarding

Events: 39 men will be in the snowboard cross field on Sunday. At 2 AM they will run the course twice to get seeding times. Alex Deibold goes first for the US, Nate Holland goes sixth, Nick Baumgartner goes seventh. and Trevor Jacob goes 11th. The top seeding times are locked in after heat one while the other snowboarders get a second heat to try and improve their times.

The 4:30 AM 1/8 Finals feature eight heats of five with the top three advancing. In the quarterfinals at 4:52 AM (four heats of six) they will be racing again for the top three and a berth in the 5:04 AM semifinals. In the semifinals the top three from each of the two heats will move into the final which will be held at 5:12 AM.
