February 23rd – Sochi 2014 – Daily Preview

What’s on tap today? The end of the Olympics as we have competition in the remaining two disciplines for the US.Two events with two gold medals up for grabs.

Out today: five disciplines that are finished for Sochi, alpine skiing, biathlon, ice hockey, snowboarding, and speed skating.

All times below are ET.

Bobsleigh

Events: The margins were tight on Saturday in the bobsleigh and now the US team of Steven HolcombSteven LangtonCurtis Tomasevicz, and Christopher Fogt has it all to go for on Sunday. They are in fourth but just 0.17 seconds out of the lead and will go fourth in the 4:30 AM third heat . The second team of Nick CunninghamJohnny QuinnJustin Olsen, and Dallas Robinson was o.90 seconds off the lead in 11th, and that’s where they will start on Sunday. Heat four is at 6 AM and will feature the top competitors in reverse order of their standings.

When:

  • Four-man Heat 3 – 4:30 AM
  • Four-man Heat 4 – 6 AM

Alpine Skiing

Events: Three American men are in the field of 117 for the slalom at 7:45 AM. Ted Ligety goes first for the US, 16th overall with David Chodounsky going 20th. The final American is Nolan Kasper who goes 31st. The field will have a second run at 11:15 AM.

When:

  • Men’s Slalom Run 1 – 7:45 AM
  • *Men’s Slalom Run 2 – 11:15 AM

What’s on tap today? Just five disciplines but competition in eight events with five gold medals up for grabs.

In today: Alpine skiing, biathlon, short track speed skating, and speed skating. Out today: Figure skating (done in Sochi), freestyle skiing (done in Sochi), and nordic combined (done in Sochi).

Alpine Skiing

Events: The final women’s alpine skiing event is Friday and four American women are in the field of 88 for the first run of the slalom at 7:45 AM. Mikaela Shiffrin goes first for the US, sixth overall with Resi Stiegler going 26th. Megan McJames will be the 38th to start and finally Julia Ford goes 51st. The second run will be held at 11:15 AM with the two times combined for the final standings.

When:

  • Women’s Slalom Run 1 – 7:45 AM
  • *Women’s Slalom Run 2 – 11:15 AM

February 20th – Sochi 2014 – Daily Preview

What’s on tap today? Just four disciplines and competition in five events with five gold medals up for grabs.

In today: nordic combined. Out today: Alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, cross-country, snowboarding, and speed skating.

Figure Skating

Events: All three US ladies had strong short programs. Now they are all in the top seven but all quite a bit behind the top three and probably needing help to reach the medal stand. The free skate begins at 10 AM but Polina Edmunds, seventh in the short program, will be the first American at 17th, fifth in group three. That should be about 12:42 PM.

In the final group going 22nd overall and fourth in the group will be Gracie GoldGold is in fourth heading into the free skate and will know if there is room for her to jump onto the medal stand. She will skate at about 1:30 PM. She’ll be followed immediately by Ashley Wagner who is in sixth and will skate at about 1:38 PM.

This is the final event for figure skating in Sochi. There will be a gala still to come on Saturday but that is just for entertainment purposes.

    • Gracie Gold – Approx 1:30 PM

What’s on tap today? Lots of changes in what you’ll see! Eight disciplines and competition in nine events with seven gold medals up for grabs.

In today: Cross-country skiing, figure skating, and ice hockey. Out today: Freestyle skiing, nordic combined, and short track speed skating.

All times below are ET.

Alpine Skiing

Events: Four American men are in the field of 109 for the first run of the giant slalom at 2 AM. Ted Ligety goes first for the US, seventh overall with Bode Miller going 16th. The final two Americans are Tim Jitloff who goes 22nd and Jared Goldberg who goes 40th. The second run will be held at 5:30 AM with the two times combined for the final standings. In the second run the top 30 times will go first in reverse order of the standings, so we’ll know the winner before the final 70+ skiers have gone.

When:

  • Men’s Giant Slalom Run 1 – 2 AM
  • *Men’s Giant Slalom Run 2 – 5:30 AM

Biathlon

Events: The men’s 15km mass-start will begin at 1 AM. The 30-man field will include only two Americans, Lowell Bailey and Tim Burke as they have the final chance to earn an individual medal for the US men in Sochi.

The women’s 12.5km mass start at 10 AM also features 30 in the field. The only American is Susan Dunklee.

When:

  • *Men’s 15km mass start – 1 AM
  • Women’s mass-start 12.5 km – 10 AM

Events: Four American men are in the 63-man field for the Super-G are Americans at 1 AM. After seeing the women fail to complete the course in large number it will be interesting to see how aggressive they are. Ted Ligety goes first for the US, ninth overall with Bode Miller soon behind him in 13th. The final two Americans are Travis Ganong who goes 25th and Andrew Weibrecht who goes 29th.

Events: Four women in the 50-woman field for the Super-G are Americans. This single run event begins at 2 AM and it won’t take long before the first American is underway. Leanne Smith will be the second down the mountain. Laurenne Ross goes seventh, Julia Mancuso bids for a second medal in Sochi while starting 14th, and Stacey Cook goes 29th.

What’s on tap today? Just eight disciplines and competition in 10 events with six gold medals up for grabs. In today: Alpine skiing and ski jumping. Out today: Ice hockey, luge, short track, and speed skating.

Alpine Skiing

Events: Alpine skiing returns with the men’s super combined on Friday. The 50-man field starts the downhill portion at 1 AM. Four Americans are in the field and they will take to the course in a tight grouping. Ted Ligety will start 22nd, Andrew Weibrecht 23rd, Bode Miller 24th, and Jared Goldberg 28th. The slalom begins at 6:30 AM and will start in the reverse-order of the times from the downhill portion.

  • Men’s Super Combined – Downhill – 1 AM
  • *Men’s Super Combined – Slalom – 6:30 AM
