February 19th – Sochi 2014 – Daily Preview

What’s on tap today? Lots of changes in what you’ll see! Eight disciplines and competition in nine events with seven gold medals up for grabs.

In today: Cross-country skiing, figure skating, and ice hockey. Out today: Freestyle skiing, nordic combined, and short track speed skating.

All times below are ET.

Alpine Skiing

Events: Four American men are in the field of 109 for the first run of the giant slalom at 2 AM. Ted Ligety goes first for the US, seventh overall with Bode Miller going 16th. The final two Americans are Tim Jitloff who goes 22nd and Jared Goldberg who goes 40th. The second run will be held at 5:30 AM with the two times combined for the final standings. In the second run the top 30 times will go first in reverse order of the standings, so we’ll know the winner before the final 70+ skiers have gone.

  • Men’s Giant Slalom Run 1 – 2 AM
  • *Men’s Giant Slalom Run 2 – 5:30 AM

Biathlon

Events: The mixed relay field includes 16 countries. The women go first with the US turning to Susan Dunklee and Hannah Dreissigacker. The two men will be Tim Burke and Lowell Bailey. Things start with a mass start at 9:30 AM.

When:

Bobsleigh

Events: Two of the three US teams are in medal contention heading into heat three (11:15 AM Wednesday) 1st place belongs to Elana Meyers and Lauryn Williams start in first, 0.23 seconds ahead of second. The second US team (Jamie Greubel and Aja Evans) will start third, 0.56 seconds behind the first American team. The final US team, United States 3, is Jazmine Fenlattor and Lolo Jones who are in 11th, 1.84 seconds behind the leaders. Heat four at 12:25 PM will feature the same teams but start order will be the reverse of the standings so the leader going in will go last.

When:

  • Women’s Heat 3 – 11:15 AM
  • *Women’s Heat 4 – 12:25 PM

Cross-Country Skiing

Events: The team sprint is a mass start event featuring just two competitors for each team. They will each ski three laps alternating turns. The US women are in the nine team first semifinal heat at 4:15 AM and need to finish top five to move into the final. Sophie Caldwell will ski legs one, three, and five. Kikkan Randall will ski legs two, four, and six. If they do move into the final that will be at 6:45 AM.

The men’s semifinals are at 5:05 AM and the US is one of 12 teams in the second heat. Simeon Hamilton has legs one, three, and five while Erik Bjornsen has legs two, four and six. If they finish top five they’ll advance to the final at 7:15 AM.

When:

  • Women’s Team Sprint Classic Semifinals – 4:15 AM
  • Men’s Team Sprint Classic Semifinals – 5:05 AM
  • *Women’s Team Sprint Classic Final – 6:45 AM
  • *Men’s Team Sprint Classic Final – 7:15 AM

Figure Skating

Events: Thirty women are in the field for the ladies’ short program on Wednesday including three Americans. The first to go will be Polina Edmunds starting 12th. Gracie Gold will be the 22nd lady to skate while Ashley Wagner will go 27th.

When:

  • Ladies’ Short Program – 10 AM

Ice Hockey

Events: The Czech Republic held off Slovakia 4-3 on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals and a matchup with the USA at 12 PM. The US has the rest advantage since they’ve had two days off. The Czech Republic was also just 1-2 in the preliminary round beating Latvia but losing to Switzerland and Sweden.

It has been 16 years since the US faced the Czech Republic in the Olympics. In 1998 the Czech Republic knocked the US off 4-1 in the quarterfinals. Jonathan Quick is scheduled to start in goal again after sitting in the final preliminary round game.

When:

  • Men’s Quarterfinals – USA vs. Czech Republic – 12 PM

TV Coverage: The ice hockey game will be shown LIVE on USA from 12-3 PM ET.

Snowboarding

Events: 32 men will start parallel giant slalom qualification at 12:42 AM and half of them will be eliminated in that event. Justin Reiter is the lone American competing in this event. There will be two runs in the qualification, one on the red course and one on the blue course. The 16 best combined times are seeded into the 1/8 finals (4:12 AM) where head-to-head competition begins.

For the rest of the event the two athletes will snowboard against each other once and then swap courses with the second place athlete delayed by how much he lost the first time. The first one down on the second run is the winner. If you DNF on the first run you are given a penalty time but are allowed to participate in the second run.

If you reach the 4:54 AM quarterfinals and don’t make the semifinals (5:18 AM) there are still some 5th-8th consolation rounds. The finals will be held at 5:35 AM.

Speed Skating

Events: The longest women’s speed skating race is on Wednesday at 8:30 AM with the 5000m. The field is only 16 strong but one American. are in there. Maria Lamb is the last American with a chance to win an individual medal in speed skating in Sochi. She’ll skate in the fourth pair. When:
