February 21st – Sochi 2014 – Daily Preview

What’s on tap today? Just five disciplines but competition in eight events with five gold medals up for grabs.

In today: Alpine skiing, biathlon, short track speed skating, and speed skating. Out today: Figure skating (done in Sochi), freestyle skiing (done in Sochi), and nordic combined (done in Sochi).

All times below are ET.

Alpine Skiing

Events: The final women’s alpine skiing event is Friday and four American women are in the field of 88 for the first run of the slalom at 7:45 AM. Mikaela Shiffrin goes first for the US, sixth overall with Resi Stiegler going 26th. Megan McJames will be the 38th to start and finally Julia Ford goes 51st. The second run will be held at 11:15 AM with the two times combined for the final standings.

Biathlon

Events Women’s biathlon wraps up on Friday with the 4x6km relay at 9:30 AM. The US is one of 14 teams in the event. Susan Dunklee will lead off with Hannah Dreissigacker second. Sara Studebaker will take the third leg and Annelies Cook will bring it home.

When:

Ice Hockey

Events: The US men can avenge the women’s loss on Friday when take on Canada at 12 PM. The men can win a medal (gold or silver) with a win and with a loss they would face Finland or Sweden with the bronze on the line. The two teams faced off in Vancouver twice with the US winning in the group stage 5-3 but losing in OT in the gold medal game 3-2. Their last meeting in the Olympics away from North America was in Nagano 16 years ago when the Canadians won 4-1 in the group stage.

When:

  • Men’s Semifinals – USA vs. Canada – 12 PM

TV Coverage: The ice hockey game will be shown LIVE on NBCSN during their coverage from 11:30 AM-3 PM ET and replayed from 5-7 PM ET.

Short Track Speed Skating

Events: Short track wraps up on Friday with one men’s event, one women’s event, and a team men’s event. In the first event, the men’s 500m quarterfinals at 11:30 AM, J.R. Celski is the only one left for the US and will be in the second quarterfinal heat. A top two finish would get him into the semifinals at 12:13 PM where another top two finish would get him into the 12:43 PM final.

In the women’s 1000 m quarterfinals at 11:44 AM there are two Americans left: Jessica Smith and Emily Scott. Smith is in quarterfinal two with Scott in quarterfinal three. Top two finishes would move them into the 12:21 PM semifinals where top two finishes would get them into the 12:53 PM final.

Finally the men’s 5000m relay will wrap up with the finals. With the US being advanced due to obstruction there are five teams in the 1:18 PM final. Celski, Eddy AlvarezJordan Malone, and Chris Creveling make up the US team.

Speed Skating

Events: Speed skating wraps up with the team pursuit events. The men’s quarterfinals are first at 8:30 AM with the US facing Canada in the first heat. Shani DavisBrian HansenJonathan Kuck, and Joey Mantia are the team for the US. The two teams will race eight laps with the first team across the line moving on to the semifinals at 10:13 AM when they’d face the South Korea-Russia winner. If they reach the semifinals they will race in either the gold medal final or the bronze medal final tomorrow. Even with a loss in the quarterfinals they’ll be in a final on Saturday to determine their ranking (5th or 6th… 7th or 8th).

The women’s quarterfinals are at 9:23 AM with the US facing the Netherlands in the fourth heat. Brittany Bowe, Kelly Gunther, Heather Richardson, and Jilleanne Rookard are the US team. If they win they’ll face the Japan-South Korea winner in the semifinals on Saturday. Even with a loss in the quarterfinals they’ll be in a final on Saturday to determine their ranking (5th or 6th… 7th or 8th).

  • Women’s Team Pursuit Quarterfinals – 9:23 AM
  • Men’s Team Pursuit Semifinals – 10:13 AM

TV Coverage: The speed skating will be included in NBCSN’s coverage from 11:30 AM-3 PM ET, included in NBC’s primetime coverage from 8-11 PM ET, and included in NBC’s latenight coverage from 12:30-1:30 AM ET Saturday.
