February 22nd – Sochi 2014 – Daily Preview

What’s on tap today? Seven disciplines but competition in eight events with six gold medals up for grabs.

In today: Bobsleigh and snowboarding. Out today: Short Track (done in Sochi).

Alpine Skiing

Events: Three American men are in the field of 117 for the slalom at 7:45 AM. Ted Ligety goes first for the US, 16th overall with David Chodounsky going 20th. The final American is Nolan Kasper who goes 31st. The field will have a second run at 11:15 AM.

When:

  • Men’s Slalom Run 1 – 7:45 AM
  • *Men’s Slalom Run 2 – 11:15 AM

Biathlon

Events: The men’s 4×7.5km relay at 9:30 AM will feature the US as one of 18 teams. Lowell Bailey will lead things off with Russell Currier going second. Sean Doherty goes third with Leif Nordgren in the final leg. Each guy has two rounds of shooting with 2.5km skiing legs surrounding them.

When:

Bobsleigh

Events: There are two US teams in the four-man event which will have heat one at 11:30 AM. Team 1 of Steven HolcombSteven LangtonCurtis Tomasevicz, and Christopher Fogt will be the second to start. The second team of Nick CunninghamJohnny QuinnJustin Olsen, and Dallas Robinson start 13th. Heat two will begin at 1 PM.

When:

  • Four-man Heat 1 – 11:30 AM
  • Four-man Heat 2 – 1 PM

Cross-Country Skiing

Events: The women’s 30km mass start features four Americans in the 57-woman field: Liz Stephen, Jessica Diggins, Kikkan Randall, and Holly Brooks. The field will start at 4:30 AM but it’ll take quite a while to complete the long 30km, more than 90 minutes.

When:

  • *Women’s 30km Mass Start Free – 4:30 AM

TV Coverage: The cross-country skiing will be included LIVE in NBCSN’s coverage from 4:30-7:30 AM ET and included as part of NBC’s daytime coverage from 2:30-6 PM ET.

Ice Hockey

Events: The US men are now tasked with rebounding against Finland on short notice. After the disappointing 1-0 loss to Canada the US has to win on Saturday to get a medal. The US faced Finland in the semifinal in Vancouver and won 6-1. This game is a bit earlier than the US has been playing, this one at 10 AM. When:

  • *Men’s Bronze Medal Game – USA vs. Finland – 10AM

TV Coverage: The ice hockey game will be shown LIVE on NBCSN from 10-12:30 PM ET and replayed on NBCSN from 6-8 PM ET. 

Snowboarding

Events: 32 men will start parallel slalom qualification at 12:42 AM and half of them will be eliminated in that event. Justin Reiter is the lone American competing in this event. There will be two runs in the qualification, one on the red course and one on the blue course. The 16 best combined times are seeded into the 1/8 finals (4:27 AM) where head-to-head competition begins.

For the rest of the event the two athletes will snowboard against each other once and then swap courses with the second place athlete delayed by how much he lost the first time. The first one down on the second run is the winner. If you DNF on the first run you are given a penalty time but are allowed to participate in the second run.

If you reach the 5:09 AM quarterfinals and don’t make the semifinals (5:33AM) there are still some 5th-8th consolation rounds. The finals will be held at 5:50 AM.

Speed Skating

Events: Shani DavisBrian HansenJonathan Kuck, and Joey Mantia will face France in the men’s team pursuit D Final at 8:51 AM with seventh place on the line.

Brittany BoweKelly GuntherHeather Richardson, and Jilleanne Rookard will face Canada in the women’s team pursuit C Final at 9:14 AM with fifth place on the line.

  • Women’s Team Pursuit C Final – 9:14 AM
