Previous World Archery Indoor Championship Coverage
There were 12 athletes in competition for the US but there was no doubt the headline maker was Erika Jones. The 25-year old compound archer broke the world record by two points scoring a 595 (out of a possible 600) in her ranking round. She has three team gold medals at the World Championships and an individual gold at the World Games last year, but still is searching for the individual world championship she is quite capable of winning. We’ll see if breaking the 13-year old record is a sign of how strong she’ll be in the knockout round beginning tomorrow where she will be the #1 seed.
A busy day is ahead on Thursday. We start the day with 32 alive in each of the individual competitions. Those will all be narrowed to four as will the team competitions that begin with between eight and 16 teams a piece. The rest of the World Championships is at a bit of a slower pace, but which Americans will get to take part in that?
Men’s Compound
Jesse Broadwater and Braden Gellenthien, led the way with 598s to take the top two spots in the elimination rounds. American Reo Wilde had a good day as well shooting a 594 to get seeded 10th. All three will start competition on Thursday in the round of 32 with the field being narrowed down to just four by the end of the day. Gellenthien and Wilde would meet today in the quarterfinals if both win their first two matches.
On the team side the US had a good day and topped the Dutch by four points for top spot. They have earned a bye for the round of 16 but will have to beat a team in the quarterfinals on Thursday to advance to Friday’s semifinal.
Women’s Compound
Right behind the record setting Erika Jones on Wednesday was Christie Colin in second place. Colin is on the same side of the bracket as American Crystal Gauvin and they would meet in the quarterfinals today if both win their first two matches.

The women’s team also ranked first in the ranking round but by an even wider margin than the men did. There are no round of 16 matches in the women’s event so the quarterfinals are set and the US need only beat Poland to reach the semifinals on Friday.
Men’s Recurve
In the recurve event the US was not as strong but they did qualify all three men for the round of 32 with Brady Ellison leading the way in seventh and just a point out of third. Ellison might have to take out the #1 seeded player, Heoriy Ivanytskyy today if he wants to make it to the semifinals. Ellison could face fellow American Victor Wunderle in the quaterfinals, but Wunderle would probably have to beat Ivanytskyy to get there. Jeremiah Cusick has nearly as tough a draw as you can get, but if he can knock off Florian Kahllund in the round of 32 anything could happen.
In the team event the US was just the sixth best team in the ranking round but again the margin was slim, just five points over 180 shots separated the US and Japan (third). The US would get a chance to knock off Japan if they can beat Greece in the round of 16 first.
Women’s Recurve
In the women’s recurve Meghan Collins, Rebekah McLeod, and Laura Shelton all missed out on the individual elimination rounds after scoring below 560 in the ranking round. Collins came closest but was still three points short. They can still end the World Championships on a better note as they are still competing in the team event. They finished tenth today, 77 points behind third place Japan, and will face Mexico in the round of 16 on Thursday with Ukraine looming for the winner.
