Disappointment for US As They Fail to Win an Individual World Championship in Indoor Archery for First Time Ever

Previous 2014 World Archery Indoor Championship Coverage

This was the 12th Indoor World Championships held and this will go down as the first where the US failed to win one of the individual titles. While the US has not won much in the recurve competitions (just one women’s title) they had won ten of the 11 compound men’s titles and six of the 11 women’s titles. They had competitors in both the men’s and women’s final today and both finals were tied 4-4 after four sets of arrows. Both of the fifth sets went against the US though with Reo Wilde dropping set five 30-29 and Christie Colin losing her third set 29-28.

Compound Women Individual - Elimination Rounds - 3-2-14

Jesse Broadwater was vying for a bronze and a third place finish in the men’s compound on Sunday as well. His matchup with Stephan Hansen was tied 5-5 after five sets and he lost a one arrow shootoff for third.

Compound Men Individual - Elimination Rounds - 3-2-14

The only US winner on Sunday in the final matches was Brady Ellison who took home a bronze after defeating Taylor Worth in the final 6-2. It’s the second straight indoor bronze for Ellison who also finished third in Las Vegas in 2012.

The next archery coverage on WeSupportTheUS.com will be in April when the Outdoor World Cup begins with the first stage in Shanghai from April 22nd-27th. Indoor archery won’t be back until November when the Indoor World Cup begins in Marrakesh, Morocco on November 8th and 9th.

World Champions: USA Men Win Compound Archery Team Gold in Nimes

Previous 2014 World Archery Indoor Championship Coverage

A World Championship was in the cards for the US on Saturday in France as the compound men’s team of Jesse BroadwaterBraden Gellenthien, and Reo Wilde weren’t quite perfect (237 out of a possible 240) but didn’t need to be as they beat Denmark 237-234 to win the world championship and set up the possibility of the individual/team double for Wilde who will be going for the individual title on Sunday.

The win continued a long stretch of US dominance in the event. The US has won the indoors six straight times now with Italy in 2001 the last country other than the US to win the title.

Women’s Compound

The women’s team wasn’t able to duplicate the men’s success as they fell in the final 233-234 to Mexico. It was a tough result for Christie Colin, Crystal Gauvin, and Erika Jones who will have to settle for a silver after a strong ranking round that had the Americans with the #1 seed. The US scored higher than anyone else in quarterfinal and semifinal matches but it didn’t matter because when the two teams actually met in the final Mexico delivered.

The win for Mexico was their first world title of real significance and ended more than a decade of US domination in the women’s event. The US had won seven straight titles and last lost in 1999 when France won.

America Represented in World Championship Matches in Both Individual and Team Compound Men’s and Women’s Events

Previous World Archery Indoor Championship Coverage

Four Americans were in the individual semifinals on Friday and half of them advanced to shoot for World Championships on Sunday. Both of them will also be going for World Championships in their team events on Saturday bringing up the possibility of double World Championships.

Men’s Compound

Jesse Broadwater became the second of the two Americans who led the way in the ranking round to fall in the elimination rounds. He lost 6-5 to Sergio Pagni in the semifinals on a match that went to a single arrow shootoff. America still is represented in the final though as Reo Wilde came from behind to win 6-4 against Stephan Hansen. The two will now trade opponents on Sunday with Wilde shooting for gold and Broadwater for bronze.

Four American Individuals and Two American Teams Into Semifinals at World Archery Indoor Championships

Previous World Archery Indoor Championship Coverage

The elimination rounds began with nine Americans in three individual events and four teams still in the running. After narrowing every competition down the final four there are still Americans in three individual events, including one with a potential all-American final, and two teams still in the running. All of the semifinals will take place on Friday so we’ll know who is playing for a World Championship pretty soon.

Men’s Compound

Jesse Broadwater and Braden Gellenthien were the top two seeds for the elimination rounds but only one will be in the semifinals. American Reo Wilde who was the “other American” in the ranking round knocked off Gellenthien in the quarterfinals to end Thursday so there are still two Americans alive and both Wilde and Broadwater are opposite sides of the bracket so they can set up an all-American final if they both win today.

In the team event the US had a bye into the quarterfinals and then put away Great Britain 238-233 to advance to the semifinals on Friday where they will take on #4 Sweden. With the three American men yet to be beat head-to-head by anyone from another country this week the expectations will be high for a potential double gold for Broadwater or Wilde.

Erika Jones Sets New World Record as 9 of 12 Americans Advance at World Archery Indoor Championships

Previous World Archery Indoor Championship Coverage

There were 12 athletes in competition for the US but there was no doubt the headline maker was Erika Jones. The 25-year old compound archer broke the world record by two points scoring a 595 (out of a possible 600) in her ranking round. She has three team gold medals at the World Championships and an individual gold at the World Games last year, but still is searching for the individual world championship she is quite capable of winning. We’ll see if breaking the 13-year old record is a sign of how strong she’ll be in the knockout round beginning tomorrow where she will be the #1 seed.

A busy day is ahead on Thursday. We start the day with 32 alive in each of the individual competitions. Those will all be narrowed to four as will the team competitions that begin with between eight and 16 teams a piece. The rest of the World Championships is at a bit of a slower pace, but which Americans will get to take part in that?

Men’s Compound

All three will start competition on Thursday in the round of 32 with the field being narrowed down to just four by the end of the day. Gellenthien and Wilde would meet today in the quarterfinals if both win their first two matches.
