The US men’s four team of Charles Cole, Matthew Miller, Henrik Rummel, and Seth Weil had posted the top time on Friday in the heats which advanced them directly to the final. It wouldn’t matter much unless they matched that accomplishment on Sunday. The US did just that winning the final over Italy by 0.28 seconds.
In the lightweight men’s four the US team of Robin Prendes, Anthony Fahden, Edward King, and Tyler Nase didn’t have quite as much success as just like on Saturday they were well behind the Swiss team. The US also got beat to the line by China (by 0.66 seconds) but finished third to grab the bronze medal.
The first stage of the US Rowing Olympic Trials started Sunday in Sarasota, Florida. The next World Rowing Cup event is in Lucerne, Switzerland starting May 27th.

Day 2 Update
The US lightweight men’s four team of Robin Prendes, Anthony Fahden, Edward King, and Tyler Nase made it to Sunday’s final but they didn’t have much time to spare. Competing in the second semifinal, and needing a top three finish to advance, the US finished with a time of 5:55.24 that would have been good enough to win semifinal A by almost a second. Instead it left them third in their semifinal and just 0.28 seconds ahead of the fourth place Italian boat. The US certainly has a shot to win or at least medal on Sunday.
Thomas Graves wrapped up his competition in the men’s single sculls competing in the Final D. Graves was much closer to his first time from Friday and finished second to the Latvian boat in the race.
Along with the lightweight men’s four team competing in the final on Sunday the men’s four team of Charles Cole, Matthew Miller, Henrik Rummel, and Seth Weil will compete as well after having reached the final directly with the top time on Friday in the heats.

Day 1 Update
Things went really well for the US team of Charles Cole, Matthew Miller, Henrik Rummel, and Seth Weil in the men’s four competition on Friday. The US posted the top time of 5:52.07 in the heats to advance directly to the final. The lightweight men’s four team of Robin Prendes, Anthony Fahden, Edward King, and Tyler Nase didn’t have the opportunity to reach the final directly but posted the second fast time (6:00.95) to advance to the semifinals on Saturday. Finally Thomas Graves in the men’s single sculls was third in his heat and was forced into the repechage later in the day. Graves was the eighth fastest in the heats. He wasn’t able to recreate the magic in the repechage. His timer earlier in the day still wouldn’t have been enough but he was fourth in his repechage and will now compete in the D Final on Saturday.
The men’s four will be off until Sunday’s final while the lightweight men’s four team will compete in the semifinals on Saturday.
With the US Olympic Rowing Trials about to being in Sarasota, Florida there is not a large contingent of Americans competing in the Rowing World Cup event in Varese, Italy this weekend. The US will have competitors in the men’s four (Charles Cole, Matthew Miller, Henrik Rummel, and Seth Weil) as well as the lightweight men’s four (Robin Prendes, Anthony Fahden, Edward King, and Tyler Nase) and Thomas Graves in the men’s single sculls. Heats in all three events are on Friday.
